Dolly or Whitney?

I recently had a disagreement with a friend. I think Dolly's version of I will Always Love You is a much better and sweeter version of this song. Whitney seems to me a little deranged in her version. After all, if a women started screaming at you like Whitney does you'd probably think the was a raving nutter and run a mile. What does everyone else think?

I have always prefered Dolly's version.

I have always loved Dolly's version as well. She sings from the heart, whereas Whitney sings from the diaphragm. Dolly's version makes me feel special, while Whitney's makes me feel stalked.

Dolly was stunningly BEAUTIFUL in this film and her voice could melt the hardest of hearts.

I really like Whitney's version. She sang the crap out of that song. It's very powerful.

But Dolly's version is amazing. She sings it from the heart. Her voice is just simple and beautiful. Hearing her sing it gives me goosebumps.

There is nothing wrong with having and liking different versions of a song:

Dolly Parton's is lovely
Linda Ronstadt's is somber
John Doe's is depressing
Whitney Houston's is powerful (with emphases on the word "power")

YUP! Dolly!!

Dolly all the way. Her version has so much more emotion and truth in it. Whitney's is ok, but she wails...Dolly makes you feel the hurt and tenderness of the lyrics.

Dolly, no doubt about it.

Dolly, Dolly, Dolly!!!!!!! I have this song on my iPod and it always makes me cry. That and the song "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro ALWAYS make me cry.

Bless Their Heart! In the South, saying that makes talking about someone OK.

In my mind Dolly's is the definitive version. Listening to it for the first time, I finally realized and understood what the song was really about. And I don't think that most people get that. Especially not the people who request/dedicate whitney's version on radio shows. I mean sure, it's a love song but it's also so much more. She's singing about leaving the one she loves for the greater good...I think that from whitney's version all people ever hear/get is "I will always love you", and don't see what it's really about and that it is a sad break-up song.

Not even close!! Dolly's version sounds like it's real and from the heart. It should, she wrote it. Whitney's is just the typical pretentious vocal gymnastics without any REAL emotion. I mean come on, 11 different notes for the word "if"!! But, I guess when you're high on crack you tend to over-do things. Again, Dolly's is the best hands down.
