Jean Shepherd cameo

I always wondered what Jean looked like but for some reason I never googled him...I finally decided to Google Jean Shepherd interviews and I found one of him being interviewed for A Christmas Story. Not at all what I imagined him to look like. Anyways I was watching the movie on TNT at the same time and it was at the mall Santa scene..right when Ralphie and his brother are getting into what they think is the start of the line...until a man with a beard tells them that the line ENDS here...it starts OVER THERE...and wow he looked exactly like the video of him being interviewed...and it's funny because when I put his face to memory..I immediately recognized the voice. I must have seen this movie 1000 times since the 90s and never did I once recognize the voice until today.

Wow, that’s cool!

thanks!

Yeah it's a neat cameo. Director Bob Clark cameos too as the neighbor talking about the 'major award'.

reply

Yeah, once you know it’s him, the voice is unmistakable.

Thanks for pointing that out, all the little trivia bits really add something year after year.

Jean Shepherd had a radio show on WOR radio in New York City in the 1960's and 1970's. It was on 9:15-10:00 every week night. He told many many stories about growing up in Indiana with Schwartz, Flick and Brunner. He also told stories about being in the army. It's odd, because after a while, I started to realize that no ONE person could not have had all these experiences, so he did make up some of it-- or borrowed it from other people's experiences.

Definitely before my time but it sounds like something I would have listened too if I were alive then. I'm a big fan of talk radio.

This is a good dramatized version of one of his radio shows: https://youtu.be/zow7fro-WGE

Thanks Jennie. I will have to listen to it sometime.
