Harry's idiot bosses...

They are a part of every Dirty Harry. The pencil pushing morons always threatening Harry's career.

What makes this one so irritating is that they bash him for simply not letting himself get killed. After he avoids a mob hit from 4 guys, 2 with auto weapons they blame him for the carnage like it was his idea.

Then some idiot punks attack his car with baseball bats and throw a Molotov cocktail into his back seat. Again he prevails by fire bombing them into the bay. Again he is attacked for the outcome. WTF?

He did not look for trouble they were trying to kill him!

Putting him on vacation also made no sense. If you want him safe and out of trouble you would want him around other cops.

Agreed. His superiors cut Harry 0 slack, which makes no sense, but they went real overboard in this one.

To be fair though in Magnum Force we learn that the guy seemed to personally hate Harry, then it turns out he's corrupt, and Jennings is trying to cover up things in this one. Still, when he rescues that patrol man, it's like Jennings doesn't even care.

His superiors have their own superiors (e.g. the frigging mayor of SF) who are jumping up their ass for continually allowing one of their inspectors to rack up abnormally high body counts and collateral damage bills. They keep him around because he gets results but they come at a cost they can't just ignore. Not realizing that sort of thing is how we all know you still live in your parents' basement and never touch grass. Over the course of the sequels it becomes cliche and then self-parody, which is meta and cool, or at least was back when the last couple of sequels were new, when almost nobody had done it to their own franchise before.
