Question about an accent (spoiler)

I have only watched it once (really liked it btw) and was wondering if Jane's accent was inconsistent on purpose? She seems to have a Texas accent at first but once she realizes it's Travis, the Texas accent goes away. In the movie, is she supposed to be faking the Texas accent for her customers and you hear her normal voice when she no longer "working." Once again, I've only seen it once so I could be mistaken.

I noticed that too. It wasn't intentional. When her accent started to disappear were lines that she delivered in whispers and/or extremely emotionally. It's much harder for an actor to sustain a "fake" accent under those circumstances so her true accent poked through a bit. If the film had a higher budget they might have re-shot those scenes, then again the performance was so good they might have just left it be.

My family is from the Houston area. Her accent sounded completely convincing to me.

I took it as intentional as to her customers vs. Travis.

In life, Ms Kinski has a strong German accent. I grew up with German parents, so I can spot the variations right away. I only caught a bit of it, so I think what we heard was what she and Wenders intended.

With that in mind, I found it interesting that Ann had a strong French accent, and that Dr. in the beginning had a German one. When I lived in Texas, I don't think I heard a French accent at all, and German only in the Bier Gartens in New Braunfels, a German-settled city.
