Macgyver = retarded?

I recently bought the entire series, and for the most part, I enjoy the series a lot.

However, Mac's pathological aversion to using a gun is Monk-esque. In the pilot, Mac uses an macine gun twice. The episode where Mac and his grand dad are being chased by 8 armed killers.....and Mac ko's several of the gun men, only to leave the guns behind.....was tough to believe.

One of the ongoing characters, Jack Dalton, a chronic liar, and most likely a sociopath, makes each episode, with him in it, a carbon copy of the last one. Jack lies, suckers Mac to go along with an impossible scheme. If Mac is such a genius.....why does he seem surprised when Jack's plan ends in disaster.
