The first half is pure gold but...

I love this movie, I have watched it every Christmas since I can remember. The first half of the movie is just amazing and magical. Unfortunately, when it switches to the 1980s and introduces B.Z. it just goes downhill with a cheesy tacked on plot that makes very little sense. It's almost as if the writers were making two different movies then mashed them together.

Lithgow, though, is such a villainous treat, I couldn't imagine him not being in this film. Moore plays Patch in a contemporary setting so fish-out-of-water innocent, I think that aspect makes the second half worthwhile. That and his playing off the unscrupulous Lithgow is quite a alteration to the jolly and selfless Santa.

I think the problem is that Santa never meets the villain, like Superman did. So there is no conflict between good and evil. They should've had them meet so it would work better.

this is true but it's still fun to see the 1980s. the basketball scene is gold.
