John Lithgow's fantastic OTT performance!

Did anyone else love John Lithgow's fantastic performance? It was so OTT! All the way to him ODing on Candy Canes and floating up INTO SPACE!

Why DIDN'T he die of lack of oxygen and freezing at high altitude?

;)

FOR FREEEEE?????

Lack of oxygen and freezing? Don't forget the total loss of atmospheric pressure, he would have exploded, and we certainly wouldn't have been able to hear his voice because in space there is no air to vibrate to make sound waves! But the parents of the kiddies don't want that. :P

And yes, haha, FOR FREEEEEEEE???? is possibly the best moment in the whole film, I always rewind it to play it again!

Yes, I know. I like it that way. Makes me look the way I feel.

The best moment by far is when his niece comes in to say "merry christmas uncle" to him and he spins round in his chair, the camera brilliantly going close up at the time and he says "IT CERTAINLY SHOULD BE, AHAAHAHAHAHAHA" with a devilish sort of grin on his face, absoloutely hilarious.

reply

"Oh that's fantastic. How do you get your face so red so fast?"

The line belongs to Moore, but the look on Lithgow's face made it funny.

reply

CHRISTMAS 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (while holding up two fingers on his hand)

Absolutely Hilarious.....

reply

LOL You just made my night lol.

FOR FREEEEEEE!!!!

reply

Only thing worth watching in this film was his performance.

I love "STOP!? ARE YOU INSANE!"

Have you ever had one of those mornings when you just want to drop a BOMB ON THE WHOLE WORLD!?

reply

That scene when he's floating in space always freaked me out when I was a kid.

Best lines in the film:

"hukhukhukukukuk.... FOR FREE?!?!?!"

and

"Christmas.... TWO!"

I too always rewind and play these bits again

It still kind of freaks me out. But that's the Salkinds for you; they like to play rough. See also: Supergirl where the relatively harmless Brenda Vaccaro is forced into the Phantom Zone with Faye Dunaway at the end.

For that matter, the original scripted ending of Superman II had Superman hurling Lex Luther and the Kryptonian villains into outer space where they, too, would presumably die from exposure.

"Towzer, sometimes I wonder about you."

his best performance

The Salkinds made this movie they made the supermans as well like Superman 4 when Nuclear man carries off that woman into deep space and she seems just dandy.

reply

Yes, he was fantastic! As a matter of fact, he is one of my favourite actors in this film along with Dudley Moore.

I was watching 3rd Rock from the Sun and I just remember John Lithgow is in this. Oh, sweet 1985. We had a school outing to go see this movie.

Those noises he makes when he rips up his lapel flower in the first scene in his office floors me every time!

John Lithgow is king of Over the Top. He chews scenery so well, walking a really fine line.

As for the space thing, I'm sure the magic candy canes protected him from all space related problems.

Man, I love me some sleighs drawn by reindeer. Even if they are all girls.

reply

He was great in this although the movie as a whole was quite disappointing.

reply

Yup. Huddleston and Lithgow were both great.
