Is this movie as lame, gey and 80s as it looks?

This seems like the most obnoxious 80s movie ever. Like it was grown in lab by scientists trying to unlock the code for the Asshole gene.

Is it?

reply

Pretty much, from what I remember, anyway.

reply

It is fabulous.

reply

John Parr's Man in Motion is the theme song from the film. If you think that song sucks then you'll think the movie sucks. They were made for each other.

Probably the weakest and most self-absorbed of the 80s coming of age films.

reply

The songs pretty good,
The movie sucks. I think. I think i've seen it but so unmemorable its hard to tell.

reply

I watched it for the first time this year and I couldn't agree more.

What's stranger is how the cast looks too young to play these characters even though they were about the right age.

reply

It seemed to me at the time that the brat pack decided they wanted to try and do a Big Chill movie but because they weren't as talented and had no insights being such young turds as they were, that this movie was what they thought of as being deep and meaningful. It was really only memorable for the soundtrack, beyond that it was a flaming turd.

i rewatched it recently (now as an adult) & didn't realize how awful the characters actually are

reply

It is a great film and you should watch it immediately.

reply

To me it's one of those guilty-pleasure type movies that I have to watch every once in a while. It perfectly captures 80s yuppie-ness.

reply

Reality Bites gives it a run for its money in the projectile-vomiting department. They both suck ass.

reply

Agreed. I'm watching "With Honors" right now, which is pretty bad, but at least not it's as bad as either "Reality Bites" or "St. Elmo's Fire". They all have some good tunes tho.

reply

REALITY BITES IS EXCELLENT...YOU ARE EITHER TOO OLD OR TOO YOUNG TO APPRECIATE THE GEN X 90'S CLASSIC.

reply

Well considering I'm 44 now, was a teenager when the movie came out, and didn't see it until I was in my 30s, I guess you could say I was too old to appreciate it when I finally did see it. Had I seen it when I was a teen or in my 20s I may have enjoyed it more, but probably not. Guess I'm more of a Kevin Smith or John Hughes kinda guy. I don't like movies that take themselves so seriously. Give me Cable Guy, Zoolander, or Tropic Thunder any day when it comes to Ben Stiller directed movies.

reply

I DIG YOUR CHOICES...I AM 40 NOW AND SAW ALL THOSE FILMS AS THEY CAME OUT...I ALSO HAS QUITE THE CRUSH ON MISS RYDER AND MISS GAROFALO...SO...NO DOUBT I WAS WATCHING REALITY BITES OPENING WEEK.

reply

It's actually pretty good.

reply

If you saw it when you were about the same age as the cast like I did, you probably thought it was good.

Then once real life hits -- marriage, careers, mortgages, children -- you start to realize how cringy it really was.
