Was "birdland" meant as some kind of racial thing?


Vincent says that about the pool hall where a lot of Black players are playing. The only place I ever heard that name before was about the New York jazz club where so many legends played, most of them Black. But that still seems kind of weird.

It's just a bebop tune, not anything to make a big "racial" deal of. I'm white and I've got it on at least half a dozen different records. Just a tune.

But he said it about a pool hall, not a concert hall. The only plausible reason seemed to be that there were a bunch of Black people playing pool there.
