this was one of the worst movies i have ever seen. Anyone who thought it was really good, please tell me why.

This movie has always been one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Yeah, it's silly and moronic and it isn't plausible from a real-life perspective at all, but it's good cheesy fun, in a 80's kind of way.

I love the Hades Bomb. A bomb that somehow is able to accelerate in front of an aircraft on final, and create an infinite line of flame that can't simply be driven around or circumnavigated. =/

i loved this movie

I first saw this movie as a lil' kid with my dad when it was on HBO and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Now I realize how cheesy, jingoistic and unrealistic it was but still find it to be great fun.

reply

At the time I loved this movie. But that was mostly because of the flight scenes and because I was very much into aircraft stuff. I had never seen a movie before that had fighter aircraft in it. So that was a big selling point to me.

When I watch Iron Eagle now it looks cheesy and dated, but I still enjoy it. There's a nice 80's nostalgia feel to this movie.

reply

I love it!

Not because it's a great movie (which it isn't) but because of all the yummy F-16s. I'm willing to bet that most who like this movie are airplane-crazy. I sure am.

So never mind about the silly story or the over-all cheeziness, it's got great flying scenes and kick-ass dog-fights. Who needs anything more than that? :-)

"So? You were a guide. - A Ranger! I was a Ranger!"

I hate it with a fiery passion. I suppose it was cool when I was a kid in the 80's, but it's just so god awful.

It seems like I saw it nonstop in the 80's, to boot.

reply

I liked the movie. I agree with some here it's a bit cheesy but it has a unique flavor that made up part of the 1980s. IT's soundtrack is awesome except for a few oldies songs. It's clean compared to movies today. Anyone else agree.

reply

This movie is indeed bad. But it is hilarious. It is too bad that the gang from "Mystery Science Theater" isn't around to parody this cult film!

reply

I like this movie! I wish people would quit looking at movies of an era, and say how bad it was. I hope people 20 years from now look at movies you like and rip them apart! I don't have to justify to you why I like a movie. I do.

reply

If you like this movie, great. Glad you do. But that doesn't mean someone else might not agree with you. That and I'm sure plenty of people disliked this movie when it was first released as well roughly 40 years ago. (As opposed to 20...).

Anyway, no you don't need to justify why you like it, but at the same time you must FEEL the need to justify it or at least defend it, otherwise why post?

Or to put it another way, people are allowed to dislike films you like.

reply

I like it just 'cause it was a movie I liked as a kid. I just thought planes were cool and this movie had a bunch. I still like it, more because it's cheesy and cliche though.

It's worth a laugh.

I liked this movie.

THe soundtrack totally rocks. I didn't appreciate the music when I was a kid but I appreciate it more than ever. I wish they included 2 more songs on the soundtrack, eyes of the world and old enough to rock and roll. I want those songs badly, anyone have any idea where I can get them.

reply

I really like this movie, both the soundtrack and the movie itself were superb. This movie reflects the very soul of the 80s.

reply

I agree. the Mini skirts, denim jackets, ripped jeans, definitely mid 80s, the hairdo

reply

I agree. And I like this movie, especially the soundtrack.

reply

It seems like a mix between Top Gun and Ferris Bueller's Day Off...
I like it because of the simple story line (I like simple for entertainment ;-), the scenery's during flight, the BS-factor/obvious goofs, Louis Gossett Jr. and most of all the music.

If you like realism, this one is not for you.
But in that respect, I think we have to preset our minds' realism factor to the anticipated level, prior to watching ANY movie. (If not, King Kong, Star Wars and James bond would be pretty hard to swallow...)

Please tell me, what made it so bad for you?

reply

This movie came out before Top Gun. The movie definitely rocks.

The fashion reflects the decade at the time. If we can all go back to simpler times.

reply

I loved the movie as a kid. It's a bit simplistic now, but military movies were like that. At least it's not Top Gun.

reply

Ya know what? I'm with a lot of you here, this is a HUGE nostalgia thing for me. But I just caught it on AMC for the first time in maybe 10 years and still find it as awesome as I did when I was a kid. Though extremely non-plausible at times, well, most of the time, its not NEARLY as cheesy as I would have thought, nor as cheesy as some things I see today. I will love this movie forever. The twisted sister scene, and that song, still give me goosebumps.

reply

The movie is unrealistic, however, this movie wouldn't have been very good if it had been. The only sad thing is to think about how people would react to a movie like this today. No wonder everybody in the middle east thinks we're the great Satan. We illegally barge into other countries and kill people just to rescue one American. Hmmmmmmmm.......well it made a good movie anyway, and if it was my dad I'd be ready to kill those Libyan (or whatever nationality) bastards as well.

reply

Right lawofcreation, the Muslim fanatics are just missunderstood.
Its actually the "Great Satan" U.S. who fly planes into buildings and chop off heads.
And as far as the movie being unrealistic, the fact that those savages didn't kill Col. Masters, thats unrealistic.

reply

The movie reflected the mood of America at the time of mid 80s. Reagonomics was in full force in the 80s and this movie captures that. The middle east crisis was a big concern back then so was Russia.
