Light Years ahead of Pvt.Ryan.
Platoon, finest war film since the 1940's!

Agreed!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

Very good post. As much as I like saving private Ryan there are a lot of corny moments. I found the characters, story and setting much better in platoon. I also love the score it's one of my favourites.

Platoon is not only the greatest Vietnam war film ever made, its also the best WAR film ever made.

Haters gonna hate

The beginning was solid until the part where they start smashing the head of a mentally challenged and crippled guy.

Chris pretending to shout in Vietnamese never bother using diplomacy on any of his victims. So much for a college teen.

well said.

I also think that scene reflect some of the unarmed civilian killing in Nam by soldiers that wanted to vent their frustration, in the name of fighting for our freedom, while they're in someone back yard.

Killing unarmed women and children was to easy to Oliver. How about a crippled and mentally challenged guy for a change?

Tough to decide. Each story is special in its own way. By the way I gave both movies 10 out of 10. I think (please anyone don't reply if you disagree) Platton is definitive Vietnam war film. Same I'd say for SPR - definitive WWII movie.

reply

Come and See, or Stalingrad 1993, were definite WWII films.. Look beyond American cinema. SPR was trash.

reply

Wow, isn't that a bit harsh? First of all, I am not American, neither English is my native language, so excuse for possible typing errors.

I don't wanna spend much time discussing SPR here (as it is another movie), but I'll try to be brief. I really do think is definitive WWII, at least from American-Normandy perspective. A Bridge Too Far is feet behind. To be specific about SPR, I'll say... It has great battle scenes; entertaining, yet realistic and startling, equally disturbing and sad. I mean, look at the Omaha beach landing. More or less, that's how it happened. Film itself shows the role from one private soldier and Captain of squad and their struggle. Good thing the movie doesn't emphasize much on that as it would become more drama than war. It possess dehumanizing, obviuos side of nature of the war, but it also possess humanism in it. Some situations are rather cliche and derivative, but what the heck? Same goes for your colleague below.

reply

The first 15mins are good with the beach landing, but it doesn't show the everyday mud and blood like platoon does for infantry life, and SPR has a very dramatic cheesy plot, completely unbelievable typical Spielberg trife.

reply

I don't think the plot is cheesy. Yes, it is cliche at times, but I wouldn't date to call it cheesy. I mean, it goes from beach landing to long journey in search for private Ryan and defending the town. It is unpredictable on first viewing, maybe even on second as we do not kno how the story will resolve. Hell, knowing Vin Diesel now, surprise he died first.
Spielberg possess fondness for "grandness" but this might be the only time I truly admire it.

reply

Stalingrad was not that good.

~ That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras.

reply

Much better. SPR was so patently manipulative, for example Upham shooting the German. And of course the ridiculous plot. I can't watch it again.

reply

Of course it is, everybody knows that. Different setting though...
Platoon is arguably the best Vietnam movie ever made, better than Apocalyse Now I'd dare say.
