I like Platoon because it shows war and how terrible, chaotic and ugly it is, without *beep* the audience with tales of heroism and patriotism.

So as a message, I'd go with Platoon.

But as a cinematic achievement, I think SPR is better. I wasn't all that impressed with the acting in Platoon, and the narration was pretty poor.

I like Platoon a lot, but better than SPR? Better than Apocalypse Now? There is some grade A comedy in this thread. I'm all for respecting people's opinions... within reason. Not when they're totally tarded.

Another time and another war. Why compare?

I never watched war movies until recently, but now I have seen four and this was by far the worst of the four. The others were apocalypse now, saving private ryan, and full metal jacket. This was much, much, much more boring than any of the other three and not that well acted or really much of anything memorable about it. How it has over an 8 beats me. I honestly could see someone rating it a 7 at the max. I still gave it a 6, but it was only barely good.

They were two totally different films with two totally different messages, both were equally successful in my opinion though.
