My Main Criticism of TNG is......

I'm watching Star Trek TNG for the first time, and I'm midway through season 3.
I love the show, but my main criticism is that it's almost entirely made up of standalone episodes, versus story arcs that extend over many episodes. Both approaches to storytelling have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Having standalone episodes allows for far more stories to be told, so the diversity is really appealing. Some stories don't need multiple episodes to be told, so the standalone format is perfect for them. But the problem comes with stories that DO need multiple episodes, but are only given ONE. The end up feeling rushed and shallow, with so much glossed over, all so that it can come to a tidy conclusion by the end of the episode. It feels so unsatisfying sometimes.

Longer story arcs spanning multiple episodes really draw you into the show, and gives a sense of gravity to the events that occur because you've watched them step-by-step as they've progressed. The drawback to longer story arcs is that (depending on the show) writers can get carried away with their imagination (anyone remember that tv show "Lost" LOL). So it sometimes just drags on and on, until you no longer care about how it ends.

I believe hybrid formats are great. You get the best of both worlds. Longer satisfying story arcs, as well as numerous self-contained smaller stories.

What really frustrated me today is I watched Star Trek TNG Season 3 Episode 16 "The Offspring" for the first time. Data creates a daughter named Lal, and we see him help her take her first steps into sentience and personhood. Almost as soon as her journey starts, it's already over! Her neural-net brain gets overloaded and fried from emotional processing spontaneously occurring. I was so disappointed to see this, I felt sad for Data, and sad to know that this is probably the last of this particular story, that's just the way this show works. I'm guessing there won't be another where he continues the experiment, this was it. And it's such a shame, because this opened up so much new territory for Data's journey. But they just had to tie it all together into a neat conclusion by the end of the 45 minutes.

Just wanted to see what other people think about all of this.

What are some standalone episodes that you guys really wanted extended and covered more in depth?

reply

There was also the implied romance between Picard and Dr. Crusher which was never explored in detail.

I have to agree with the OP though. While I enjoyed TNG, I would have liked some continuing storylines and some character arcs.

reply

They did some good little things with Picard/Crusher but then would just forget about it for a long time.

In "The Naked Now" when Crusher tells Picard how attracted she is to him (to illustrate how bad her judgement is) his response is "not now"! Much later there was a random scene in one episode of them having breakfast in her apartment which could have been completely innocent but made you wonder.

I never really wanted an on-screen romance between the two, but I wished they have continued to throw these ambiguous moments in episodes to make you wonder.

reply

Why is her judgement bad for finding Picard attractive?

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I have to agree with that question!

Because she acts like a MILF in heat.

reply

I actually dis-like the extended "soap oper" approach to tv shows. I keep quite busy and might see a show once a month. The latest trend to extended shows makes them mostly un-watchable. A single subject in a single show was the norm before. I guess I'm just old.

reply

Agreed. I don't like too many storylines at once either.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I love the show, but my main criticism is...

My biggest complaint about the show was always the amount of unique people/things/events. Geordi is the ONLY person to wear a VISOR, Data is the ONLY android in Star Fleet, Worf is the ONLY Klingon in Star Fleet, plus half the episodes focused on them encountering something unique. The first encounter with the Ferengi, the first encounter with a shapeshifter, the first encounter with the Borg (well, first one that's common knowledge), etc.

It's like the Enterprise was the only ship in Star Fleet that got to investigate every new phenomenon in the galaxy.

This is a THREADED message board. Please reply to the proper post!

reply

Yeah I completely agree. I was thinking the same thing today while watching TNG. I wish there were more episodes that were sort of relaxed, and just focused on character development, without dealing with any crazy new planet/race/dramatic situation. There's always some new unique dramatic situation that takes all the attention.

reply

You might like Deep Space 9 a little better then.
It did a lot with the characters.
I like DS9 a lot myself for the reason you mentioned.
It's not always some mind blowing shocker of meeting the such and such people/eminent death/ horrible disfigurement etc.

No world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed

reply

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll have to check out DS9 then.

I think it particularly aggravated me while watching seasons 1 and 2 of TNG. I swear it was like every episode the stakes were so high and the tension would grow and grow until it was all resolved at last minute of the episode. I just couldn't stand it anymore. There were far too many moments where everything hung in the balance and it burned me out lol so I stopped watching it for like 6 months. Now that I'm back I realized the episodes in seasons 3 and 4 are consistently a lot better.

reply

Don't take it so seriously. Just relax. TNG is legendary.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

It's not really a matter of taking it "so seriously."
You try watching all 40+ episodes of seasons 1 and 2 back to back, I think you'll see what I mean. It gets irritating.
But now that I've watched seasons 3 and 4 I really like it again.

reply

I don't have time to watch 40+ episodes back to back, brandon. That's over 20 hours. No wonder you got burned out on the show. I would too if I watched 20 hours of it. Geesh!

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher.RIP William Christopher.2016 is the worst!

reply

You must have misunderstood me. At 2 episodes a day that's over 20 days.

reply

Brandon.... how can we misunderstand something you didn't write?

but if you are getting 'burnt out' by watching two episodes a day, then the show isn't for you.

now others know how I feel when I pass by a channel showing BBT or HIMYM.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

reply

I watched them over the period of a month or two. When I said "back-to-back" i just meant I watched season 1 and then season 2, instead of skipping to 3 or 4 like most people recommend. I didn't realize until after I finished season 2 that a lot of people recommend starting with season 3, because of how poor a lot of the first two seasons are. I still watched other shows in the meantime, "The Flash" and "Supernatural." Sorry for the confusion.

but if you are getting 'burnt out' by watching two episodes a day, then the show isn't for you.

I actually love the TNG, it's one of my favorite shows.

reply

I get what the OP means, the last time I saw TNG was when I was 7-13 years old and rewatching the first 2 seasons was a chore unlike the other ST shows. But season 3 onwards is definitely an improvement.

reply

I have watched seasons 1 and 2 numerous times, so I know exactly what you're talking about. I just don't find them as bad as most.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

how is this not like literally every show from the late 80's? even Perfect Strangers? Family Matters??? this happened all the time.

and no one is making anyone binge watch seasons 1 and 2 now. it's great that we can binge watch but it is not a requirement.

I will not argue with you that season 3 and on are vastly better than 1 and 2 but as with all long running series, the characters are still being fleshed out in season 1 and 2.

I have a big problem with Golden Girls episode where Elliot Clayton [Sophia's doctor] is dating Dorothy but is also hitting on Blanche who is surprisingly not having any of it. Blanche tells Dorothy what Elliot is doing but Dorothy takes Elliot's side during it. this was like the 5th episode of the first season. we hardly knew these characters.

see how fleshing out a character works wonders?

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

reply

Being similar to other shows during a certain time period doesn't prevent it from being irritating. I'm grateful the writing got better, and that there's a much bigger variety of shows today that don't depend on the same old tropes.

reply

Cheers was fantastic right from the very first episode.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

and that has what to do with anything?

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

reply

Uh...you said shows usually go a couple seasons before they get good, and I'm telling you that Cheers is the exception to that rule as it was phenomenal from episode one.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I didn't say that at all. I said that the first couple of seasons of shows still need their characters to be fleshed out.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

reply

And I said Cheers was superbly fleshed out from the beginning. Exception to the rule.

reply

we get it, you like Cheers!

reply

Lol. It's a great show.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Well it could be worse.
How about shows like Game of Thrones or Walking Dead, were there is a big conflict.....................
And the episode ends!

Sorry, you have tossing until next week to see what happens.

I'll take "they solve the problem" in the same episode.
I don't think television is better at all now as apposed to the 80's

No world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed

reply

Yeah, there are benefits and drawbacks to both the standalone episode format and the long story-arc format. I agree, I don't like it when a show seems to drag on for the sake of dragging on, or leave you in suspense at the end of every episode.

I think Game of Thrones is amazing, and really benefits greatly from its format. I've read all the books and the way the story unfolds over time is fascinating.

reply

You should read the books it's based on by Maurice Drouon.
Those are way better!
And they are based on reality too.

I love the show, but my main criticism is that it's almost entirely made up of standalone episodes, versus story arcs that extend over many episodes.

But isn't this a problem with just about every show of the era? Other than soap operas, every TV series contained episodes that told one story and that was that. Sure every now and then they'd throw in a "to be continued" but that would be resolved in the next episode.

There were some exceptions like X-Files (and it was always disappointing to me when they went back to monster of the week episodes) but one-story episodes was just the nature of the beast back then.

Sorry if this has already been addressed. I haven't read this thread because I'm only on season 1 so I don't want anything spoiled for me. After watching stuff like Heroes (at least the first season) Dexter & Lost it can be difficult to watch these older shows. But so far, I'm really enjoying season 1 of TNG and I hear it's supposed to be crappy and the show gets better during or after season 2.

Keep going. TNG is the best Trek. You'll see.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Sure, it may have been a problem of many shows of that era.
I still wish TNG had some better story arcs.

Yeah, keep watching. The first seasons are very hit-or-miss. Some very good episodes, but also some pointless filler episodes, redundant episodes, and very predictable episodes. But overall it's still TNG, it's a good show, and it's just nice to be in the Star Trek universe and coming along for the ride.

reply

I really enjoyed season 1. If it gets a lot better then that's good news for me.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

Yes definitely. Enjoy!

reply

This series, like almost all star trek only really become great after season 3. They all take their time to find their feet. As for it being "stand-alone" episodes, that does nothing to effect the quality of the show.

reply

And I don't think it takes to the third year to get good. Season 2, for sure. End of season 1, even.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Barbara Hale. You were great in Perry Mason. RIP William Christopher.

reply

My critisism with TNG is just the opposite. I'm not a fan of episodic tv in general, I prefer stories told over whole seasons like 24 or Dexter (my favorites). But Star Trek TOS was the one exception to that rule. The reason I like it more is because it gives the show a more broad range. An episode like "the trouble with tribbles" would not work in a show with a long story arc because it would not fit the style and atmosphere of all the other episodes. While seperate episodes gives the luxury of really doing complete different styles. A show like Star Trek really needs those funnier episodes for me or it really starts to drag. And that's my biggest critism of TNG. Why, even the most serious episodes of TOS had this lightness to them. Be it a joke at the expense of Spock, the relationship between him and McCoy or the acting of William Shatner, it always kept that style. TNG is a much more ambitious show with a LOT of continuity between seasons and episodes and it's my impression that, at least to the makers, this meant it had to be deadly serious 100% of the time. It's a damn shame, because I'm trying to get through the best episodes of TNG but I'm really struggling with it as there is almost no comic relief of any kind.

reply

I agree with your points. It's a valid criticism.

I remember how great I thought it was when at the beginning of season 4 they aired the "Family" episode after part II of "The Best of Worlds".

The Enterprise was at Earth and Picard visits his home and family. Makes sense, right? Naturally, he's dealing with the traumatic experience of being captured by the Borg. Stewart had some great scenes with the actor who played his brother. I hoping they would continue this for a while longer. I also wanted to see Riker back home in Alaska and reunite with his dad. I wanted to see how Starfleet would deal with Picard. After what happened you would think Starfleet would have vigorously debriefed him.

But no. In the next episode they jump away from Earth with an episode about Data and Lore. Everything is back to normal.

There was another episode later on where Geordi is captured and tortured by the Romulans. The episode ends with him talking to Deanna Troi and she's telling him he has a long and difficult recovery process ahead of him. But in the next episode there's no mention or reference to what happened with the Romulans and Geordi is just plain old Geordi again.

In most cases, I prefer stand-alone episodes. Present-day drama series with endless arcs involving some nemesis who never seems to get caught become tiresome after awhile.
