6.8... Really?

This is easily one of the best comedies of the 80s possibly of all-time. This gets 6.8 and a movie like Ferris Bueller's Day Off gets 7.8 (dont get me wrong its a very good movie also). I was thinking this classic had at least a 7.3. Im from Canada and they always show it on TV.

I was surprised to see such a low rating as well.

reply

Agreed fully. This low score for such an awesome movie shows what is wrong with IMDB.

reply

I agree. This is certainly one of my favorite comedies of all-time.

reply

gotta agree with you. There's no way this is just in the 6's. I think it's an 8, I think a 7 is a bit low but reasonable. But it shouldn't be in the 6's, and it's a bit of a surprise to see such an average, it's got all the ingredients, it's not cheesy, and it's actually funny. Would imagine it'd have appealed more to the general public.

eddies best by a mile

Lots of classic Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey movies have ratings in the 6's.

reply

You score a point, here
but the only comedy movies from Adam Sandler that deserves a 7+ are Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer and maybe Airheads, the rest is awful. And not everyone. As for Jim Carrey, I think he deserves better rating for some of his movies but most are fairly accurate.

I actually just scored it a perfect 10.

I think its the best black comedy ever. Just wanted it again this weekend and laughed my butt off. So many great performances, lines and scenes.

reply

Yes, agree. I know much more people who have this movie amongst their fave as I know someone who have classics as GODFATHER or CITIZEN KANE as their faves.
Its just one of those movies that the average movie fan and hardcore movie geeks seems to like the same, so I was expecting it to be at least over 7

I wonder if black people find it stupid or somehow racist? I dunno, its just a dumb theory, cos I cant see other reasons

I doubt it. I don't know a black person that does not love this movie and can't quote at least 10 lines from it.

Its likely that many black people didn't vote here. Just another theory.

I'm from Europe, and therefore don't feel qualified to ponder wether or not there are any race issues with the low rating. My first thought was that it's more about this being "just a light hearted comedy" - something that many people don't ever seem to rate above 8 or so, just because it's not Serious Film. I try to rate within genre - how good is it in it's own genre, does it leave anything to be desired and how it rates with it's competitors.

I think this is one of the best comedies ever and certainly one of the best (if not the best) romantic comedies ever. Certainly it's the highlight of Murphy's career. I haven't seen anything as funny yet still romantic (and something that a guy can also enjoy) in romcom for years and years. "Some like it hot" comes to mind, and another favourite of mine from the 80s, "Secret Admirer", but neither film is exactly recent.

It shouldn't be about whether a movie is approved of by the society of artsy fartsy people. A movie should be rated on how well it accomplishes what it was made for. This was meant to be a light-hearted, watchable comedy, and that's exactly what it became. CTA is in the top ten of comedies, so give it a 10.
