How did Herman get down there?

and why would he do something so stupid?

reply

Tunnel or open door during the day. Alot of bums or street people turn to places like that for shelter away from the cold. Maybe there was heated steam during the day or something and he wandered in an open door or dropped through the grate. Its just a movie, you cant look that deep into it.

reply

He mentioned he needed $2 to heat his place, I wonder how that would've worked?

reply

Sterno maybe? Some kind of canned heat would be my best guess.

When you are homeless it's either find a place like the underground room or live on the streets. At least underground he'd be out of the wind, rain or snow as the shelter would probably only be open during the day.

Calling someone in that situation stupid is very insensitive to what real homeless people go through.

To get out of the weather. There's always a way to get into the steam tunnels and they're warmer than above ground. He clearly got stuck in a non-steam tunnel and froze to death.

When you're cold, you'll do anything to get warm. Most shelters run out of space when the weather gets cold. Some people break into cars, some find steam tunnels, some just tuck themselves in an entryway, some will use a garbage bin.

The homeless in the northern United States freeze to death and no-one cares. Tucking up under a freeway overpass is common too. Normally there are blankets there from the last guy who died. You'd think you could go to a church, but they won't take you in. They're happy to let you freeze to death.

If you're in a northern city, find a way to earn $60 and get yourself south on Greyhound. At least you won't freeze. Hitch if you have to.

There's no excuse for anyone to freeze to death. Most homeless people don't want to live in a shelter. A lot of them go to shelters during very frigid cold snaps until the weather improves. They also make public announcements for shelter for the homeless during dangerous heat waves as well.

reply

They don't want to go to shelters because they can't do drugs and get drunk. The vast majority of homeless people have nobody to blame but themselves for their situation.

reply

That is probably more likely than the shelters run out of space. I'm sure a certain crowd is insulted that the homeless are not allowed to do drugs and defecate wherever they like indoors as well.

reply

Shelters do get full when it's extremely cold, but definitely telling that people prefer to sleep on the street so they can get high the rest of the time. And yeah, I actually saw the "shit cleanup crew" in downtown San Fransisco. Those liberals are insane to tolerate that.
