7.1?? What a load of cr@p!!

That said I totally love the concept.. I just think that so much more could have been done with this film given the ideas it covers..
The music.. Argh! at the half way mark I was actually getting frustrated, the fight scene, yes, great metaphor for how difficult it can be to make narrow minded people see what you want them to see but still..
Wouldn't you have legged it with the whole box of sunnies so that you could actually back up things you were trying to tell people?! And him climbing into the rubbish truck that just so happened to be doing it's rounds as he went back to find the glasses, then there being only one pair easily available from a whole box full!
The police beating people over the head with their truncheons when they raided the homeless ground.. The force they were using would have surely taken the recipients out with one blow.. Which made the truncheons look rubber to me..
The fight with the police in the side road but still totally in view of the busy traffic.. Again, surely would have attracted SOME attention?!
The trained forces/sniper types who continuously miss-fired but the civilians with guns got perfect shots every time..
So much wrong with this film in my opinion..
But like I said.. brilliant concept, some of the stuff I read about was briefly mentioned or portrayed, I think so much more could have been done with this material..
Bring on a re make!

I tend to give higher ratings to Horror movies. Well, this was more of an Action/Sci-Fi... But I think if you can make a movie like this entertaining, you deserve some extra credit. I guess when I see an interesting concept, combined with humor/violence/gore, I find I have to rate higher. I gave this movie a "9" (almost gave it a 10). And if I found this film to be in any other genre/genres, I probably would have rated it lower. But I forgive things like bad acting - it's part of what makes it fun. The actors at least look like they tried - unlike modern movies.

Now that I'm actually seeing more of Carpenters movies instead of just hearing about his famous name, I'm realizing that he does Action very well, and Action/Horror (think Halloween, etc.).

The fight scene - hilarious! :) :P

It doesn't all have to make sense. I mean, come on... Don't you hate people like that? (No offense, DawsonRoseDawson). I mean, Aliens hiding among us, and then being detected with special glasses, etc. That all ain't the most realistic. So why bother criticizing the other little elements of the film?

Remake? Well, there is Duke Nukem (the video game series)... I'd say, no remake. Unless you get Carpenter to do it. But I'd say, yeah, good thing you have an eye for the flaws. But no use picking on the little unrealistic things when the big concept is unrealistic. You're supposed to make that suspension of disbelief, so anything under that is really nitpicking. To me the errors in the film is part of what makes it funny. But only if the movie really makes a decent effort. Unrealistic parts in newer movies would probably aggravate me, though.

I think all its cheesiness just adds to how great this movie is. Probably the remake, if it's ever made, won't be half as enjoyable as this.

Ok hipster cult classics get their bumped rating for a reason.

It is even rated 7.3 now. As far as I recall it correctly it was rated 6.9 back when I first looked. People seem to wake up. More people seem to like this film, because they can see the parallels with the world we live in (no, not being ruled by aliens) and/or their own lives, not because they find the music is great or the snipers actually hitting their targets (there aren't too many films anyway where the villains have the same hit ratio as the heroes).

I think a 7 is about right for this film on the IMDB (if a little underwhelming, to say the least). Personally, I gave it a 9/10 for sheer badassery alone (thanks in part to Piper as Nada).
