Long Camera Shot (*spoiler*)

I've watched this movie a bunch of times and am always intrigued by a camera shot that I haven't seen done in any other movies. Its when Ubu Pearl's hut is on fire and the Police arrive. The camera follows then from about 10 feet above the ground, over the valley as they run down to the hut at about 30 feet in the air and then arrives back on ground level when they reach the back of the hut.

The entire scene covers about 100-150 feet of ground in a non-linear movement. Its not a crane shot so my other thought was maybe cables?

...there's another good one that takes place in the movie. It's when the camera is following Denzel's character at the scene of a crime. It follows him all the way down some steps; the cinematography in that scene is rather crafty as well as the one you've mentioned in your post.

This movie is one of my childhood favorites, and it's one hell of an underrated film..

I noticed this too, it was an amazing shot. I had to rewind it back a couple times to try to figure out how they did it, but I still don't know. It's too long to be a crane, and I don't see how it could be a cable because it goes down at the end and follows them around, almost like a Steadicam. And the whole thing is so smooth too - anyone know how they did it?!

I just watched this movie again and still intrigued by this shot. There has to be someone in the biz that can figure this one out. I'm surprised that it hasn't been done more often because it really is the most exciting scene of the movie.

This shot was done with a zip line and a steadicam. The line was strung down the side of the hill, the operator Jimmy Munro http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0614013/ sat in a bosun's chair rig on the zip line to make the shot.
The operator and actor have to be in synch for this type of shot to work, you'll notice that at one point Denzel gets too far ahead of Munro and the camera, when this happens Denzel does a quick turnaround smoothly interacts with the extras as he waits for Munro to catch up to him on the zip line. As Denzel goes to the right of the burning hut, Munro hopped out of the bosun's chair and pursued Denzel on foot for the rest of the shot. You'll notice that a plant blocks the shot for a few seconds, this is the point where Munro abandoned the chair and had to concentrate on keeping himself from planting his camera (and face) in the ground more than what was in the viewfinder.
The hallway scene (Denzel going through the labyrinth of corridors to find the dead agent) has some nice camera work in it too. The operator and actor had to be in synch here, Denzel pulls off the necessary pauses as he waits for Munro to get ahead of him seamlessly.

Thanks for the informative response, f-ascaso! Wish there was a documentary on the film so we could see that move in action. Truly some amazing work. Kudos to Munro, he is one smooth operator!

Denzel Washington is the *beep* man.

Co-sign on that one, JumeirahSun, Denzel's an awesome actor! That scene was so cool!

The Steadicam has been around since the late 70's, they could have used one with a slight fisheye lens to get the effect. I've seen similar scenes in other films, showing the actors running up stairs from a similar angle.

At 1:20 in the film, you can see the zip line mentioned in the post above.

Yes, you can see it clearly...when you're looking for it.

Munro himself covered it in this video:

Making it happen was as amazing as the shot itself.

Thanks for sharing that! I haven't revisited the Mighty Quinn in years.
