Why was it THAT bad?

Granted, it's been years since I watched this movie as a kid, but I can remember the general scheme of things. Why do so many people think this movie isn't any good? Just curious.

haha, this movie is a classic

Look at the locations for all of the people that gave it reviews and their opinions of it. You'll eventually begin to see a pattern.

I thought it was pretty funny. If you want deep, you wouldn't be looking for a movie like this, but it's light and fun entertainment.

"one major flaw. FINLAND IS NOT A MONARCHY!!"
There were more flaws than that, not to get too far, but some include the Royal House of U.K.'s name is different. Also the list of heirs to the throne of the United Kingdom has well over 600 people, compared to the few killed in the movie. Also about Finland, I too found it odd it was used, I first though that they didn't want to offend any existing Royalty, but then I remember about U.K.. There must be some reason, or it was just randomly chosen with a map and a dart.

Most Americans (including myself) still don't know what the *beep* going on in the UK. Hell, half of us are still calling the whole bunch of you 'England.'

I'm American and I found this movie to be hilarious. It really showed the cultural differences between blue-collar Americans and the aritocratic British. The funniest scene was when he meets some black African king and when he realizes that the guy is black, he starts talking to him like he is a cool American brotha. Funny scene.

reply

Heck, I'm British and I, with most of my friends really like this film. Granted some of the jokes made at the expense of the British are real antiques (Spotted Dick, ho ho... bad teeth, hee hee), but I'm pretty sure a lot of people over here like it.

I am from England and watched this movie last night for the 1st time in about 10 years. I loved this movie as a kid and used to watch it god knows how many times.......and I still really enjoyed watching it now.

I thought John Goodman was excellent. Its a simple & funny movie which is to no way be taken serious........ just in a good fun & humourous way.

I found scenes like the 'piano playing at the ball' scene just as funny now as I did do as a kid. Deserves a higher rating than its got but thats just my opinion. Come to think of it, im not sure why it took me so long to watch this movie again. I'll be making sure its a lot sooner than 10 years before I next watch it again.

Cheers.

reply

I don't understand why people from England would hate this film because of some jokes made at them because the movie makes fun of Americans just as much if not more. It's all friendly humor to laugh at stereotypes and at yourself.

reply

the photographer in the beginning has completely wiped out the royal family. that's pretty crazy and yet friendly humor.

Fiction....horray!

@lazy_eighthdwarf

You already know the meaning of the expression fictional movie. It means it is not a documentary or even based on real facts.

Biggest flaw in movie history: There is no British Secret Service agent named James Bond.

... It wasn't. Certain people should just stop being so 'precious'; they should realise that they're the ones being mocked - or maybe they do, and THAT'S why they don't like it! 6/10.

a lot of these are deliberate mistakes to make the movie silly, and so that no one got offended, for example the British Royal Family. Also, Finland was used because they say that they found oil in the baltic sea, or somewhere near there, and Finland is in the right location. They actually shot the movie calling the royal family, "Windsor", but changed it after because they were afraid people would be offended. Watch the speech John Goodman gives at the end, for example, the lip movement doesn't match what he says, because they went back after and put the name Windham, when he said Windsor.

I thought it was light hearted and enjoyable. Ralph's character made fun of the worst of American culture and the most extreme foppishness of British culture. And he comes to love Britain at the end, so people shouldn't be so offended by it.

reply

I never did find it "bad"

Fun movie.

reply

It's a bit of an insult to Britain but that's mainly due to two reasons: 1, it panders to all the old stereotypes that we're all stuffy and autocratic and 2, the producers didn't do any research or even attempt to make Britain (or Finland for that matter) even remotely realistic.

The Monarch cannot enter the House of Commons and address Parliament like Ralph does in the movie...heck, even Peter O'Toole's Lord wouldn't be able to do that and yet he does. Even Parliament looks nothing like it does in real life. The monarch doesn't have nowhere near as much power and influence over day to day government like is shown and it's all American stereotypical chocolate box "oh look at those funny Europeans" portrayls.

If they had shown one ounce of respect and had done their research, then maybe the movie wouldn't have been so panned.
