Best horror film of the 1990s

Considering the 90s was a terrible decade for horror movies, this one was quite refreshing.

Offhand, inclined to agree, BJR. 👍

In no particular order, here's a list of decent to great horror movies released in the 90's. The 90's just like the decades prior had a large number of both terrible and good horror movies.

1. Jacob's Ladder
2. Misery
3. Tremors
4. Cape Fear
5. The Silence of the Lambs
6. Scream
7. Braindead
8. Bram Stokers Dracula
9. Man Bites Dog
10. Cronos
11. In The Mouth Of Madness
12. Demon Knight
13. Se7en
14. The Frighteners
15. From Dusk Till Dawn
16. Cube
17. The Devil's Advocate
18. Event Horizon
19. Mimic
20. Audition
21. Sleepy Hollow
22. Stir of Echoes
23. The Sixth Sense
24. The Relic
25. Urban Legend
26. Candyman

If CGI is a big complaint about 90's horror, its used a lot more now and no one seems to mind, Hereditary, Don't Breath, Evil Dead and many other lauded horror movies of recent years have been loaded with it. Plus, most of the movies on that list are original and at least stray from the overkill of 80's slasher syndrome. Teens go to cabin or camp and get stabbed, rinse and repeat. I like those movies but I also enjoy the variety of horror the 90s provided us.

A lot of these films are not horror. Dusk til Dawn, Devils Advocate, silence of the lambs etc are suspense / drama

reply

No, they are horror. The devil on earth terrorizing people, vampires ripping bikers to shreds and a serial killer who skins his victims to make a skin suit and another serial killer who eats his victims. No one walked out of Silence of the Lambs or From Dusk Till Dawn and thought what great suspense\drama's. It's a known fact that Silence of the Lambs is the only horror movie to win Best Picture at the Oscar's. The 90's were a great decade for HORROR movies!

90's was among the first decades that started blending horror with other genres in the mainstream, proobably the best 90's horror film could be Terminator 2. Probably among the most famous examples, that's how horror genre changed since the 90's. The same for comedies or sci-fi, genres started expanding by mixing in other genres.

I would also add more strict classic films of the horror genre in the 90's:
The Pit and the Pendulum
Graveyard Shift
The Sect
Dr.Giggles
Children Of The Corn 2
Spontaneous Combustion
The Witches

Today I learned Terminator 2 was a horror film and that sci-fi horror and comedy horror didnt really exist until the 90's.
