Is it dangerous to live in The Bronx?

Hey, I love the movie, I really like it... I was wondering if it is dangerous living in The Bronx nowadays? I'm not racism... but I've heard that there are many black guys who are bad and delinquents.... is it true?
Does somebody can tell me how is life there?

Stay the hell away from New York that joint is a ceespool of crime in general (unless you happen to be in the wealthy class). I hate New York.

Was it really filmed at Queens? Cause a lot of it did look like the Queens. Specially those brick buildings Queens still has. I lived in Queens for a year and now I'm thinking about moving. I'm moving someplace in the city but I was told if I wanna save money I should move to the Bronx. I know that I can save money and rent and move to some place in the Bronx but then most people are so weary of the Bronx it's not funny.

The Bronx was real bad in the 60's ,70's ,80's until the mid nineties but now it isn't that bad. That place has improved somewhat. So has Manhattan ,and other parts in the island of NewYork. Even upstate New York is mostly nice. Buffalo isn't so. If you want to know of a place you have to be very careful visiting and that is Camden , New Jersey. Along with NewArk , New Jersey.

Many many years ago (when we lived in midtown Manhattan), me and my husband took the subway up to The Bronx to visit the Bronx Zoo. When we exited the subway, we hesitated at the street entrance because we weren't sure exactly where the zoo was. Suddenly a bunch of guys all pointed their arms in one direction - the direction of the zoo. They had all guessed that's where we were headed. We thanked them kindly and went on our way.

I just went to E 186th Avenue, where the "Chez Bippy" and Cee's apartment was supposed to be and it doesn't look safe at all with tennis shoes hanging from the telephone pole wires. In south central Los Angeles (or anywhere else for that matter, I'm assuming), white shoes hanging from the wires means a crack house is there. Black shoes mean there's been a gang related shooting - so it's the presence of a gang turf. And there were two pair, both white, that I saw. And you can call me racist all day long, I don't care...but white people cannot go into black neighborhoods. Neighborhoods where blacks and whites live together is fine, but completely black and they're dangerous, even for the blacks who live there. it's just a damned fact. Accept it or not, I don't care. And E. 186th Ave is a short street...I don't see where Calogero (young Chazz Palminteri) could have been near a bar...there's nothing on E 186th anymore that resembles anything that could have been a bar. All the apartments look old, so "progress" couldn't have torn it down. So it has me completely confused...

The Bronx is a huge borough of over 1 million people so obviously there is gonna be good and bad sections.

Yes. I lived there for over 35 years. I was so glad to leave and I never want to go back. That being said, there are some better areas than others. I was unfortunate enough to live in one of the rough areas where I feared for my life going outside. Good food and culture, but way too much crime. Just my 2 cents.

Dunno but Jennifer Lopez certainly goes on and on about it like it was by some miracle that she managed to survive living in the Bronx

Given this thread started in 2005, there's bound to be an evolution in opinions here, as I'm sure the borough has changed in the past 10 years.

I've lived in the Bronx for almost a year, in Belmont, the neighborhood where this movie was actually filmed. I can say with authority that it is NOT that bad. That's not to say I'd hang out outside at 3am, but I wouldn't really do that anywhere. Yeah, there is crime, but most of it is petty.

This movie is set in the '60s, when New York was a much different place. In the '70s and '80s, the Bronx was a disaster, but it's gotten better with time.

The Belmont "Little Italy" neighborhood is mostly latino now, although there are still some Italians here (my landlord is an old Italian guy who has lived here for 50 years). I've had some people be shocked when I've told them where I live, and the preconception is that it's uber dangerous to live in the Bronx if you're white, which is kind of absurd because the borough is large and there is a diverse population here (it's actually the most diversely-populated statistical area in the country). Chances are, if you're south of Fordham Road (or even a bit north) and white, you're in the minority. But that's all it means.
