Friends isn't one of them but here's the definitive list for those who have been looking for it:-

Seinfeld
Peep Show
The Dick Van Dijk Show
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
The Office (US)

Whether you like the show or not, you'd have to have in the Top 5 for crying out loud

Only fools and horses
Friends
Gavin and stacey
The inbetweeners
The office (UK)

Only fools and horses!

mmm... Very good call - I may have to re-assess. I love Inbetweens too but didn't really think it ran long enough to warrant inclusion. I suppose maybe a bit like Fawlty Towers.

reply

Yes, forgot about fawlty towers, it's a hard list to make, if I was to make it again tomorrow it would probably be different.

But only and horses and friends are always my 1 and 2

reply

It's hard to say, because people have different taste. I can only say what I like best. My criteria, other than just being funny, are:

• Intended mainly for adults.

• Primary intent is comedy (“No hugging, no learning.”):
No political bias, ideological messages, examinations of current issues, attempts to educate the audience, etc.

• Political affiliation of the characters not discernible.

• Show is enjoyable to all audience members regardless of their own ideology.

• Humor still works today.

• Main characters primarily adults. Children, if any, are peripheral.

• Few, if any mawkish “very special” moments not played for humor.

In view of those guidelines, which I understand many people will not agree with, my favorite U.S. network sitcoms, in chronological order, are:

The Honeymooners
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Get Smart
The Odd Couple
The Bob Newhart Show
Taxi
Cheers
Seinfeld
Frasier
The Big Bang Theory (early seasons, prior to Amy and Bernadette becoming prominent)
The King of Queens
Modern Family

The Simpsons
South Park
Mr. Bean
Monty Python's Flying Circus
El Chapulín Colorado
