The Tween Movies of the 90s

When this came out in 1994, I was 13..Devon Sawa was the "heart throb" kid actor and kid actor's were in HIGH demand. I can name a ton of movies that came out within a 3 year time spand that were all kid friendly and Bop and Big Bop magazines were hot on the shelves and girls had teen heart throbs like Devon Sawa, JTT, Brad Renfro, and Andrew Keegan pasting their walls.

Lets see we have :

Little Giants
Mighty Ducks Triology
Camp Nowhere
Heavyweights
Now and Then
The Babysitters Club (whatever happend to "Alex Mack")
Legend of Bear Mountain
My Girl 1 and 2
Home Alone (Culkin set off the kid actor craze)
Radio Flyer
Tom and Huck
Carpool
House Arrest
Newsies (excellent musical with Christian Bale, no it wasnt his first movie, "Empire of the Sun" was and that is a great flick)

This is just to name a few

Nowadays we have Dakota Fanning who pretty much is the only "kid actor" out there now that you regularly see.

These movies were great. No sex, violence, drugs, or even cussing (maybe "hell" or "damn")

I think Hollywood should tap back into that kid actor era and bring them back. Now you have young adults over the age of 18 playing 14 year olds. Granted Devon Sawa was 16 in Little Giants playing a 10 - 11 year old.

I just think Hollywood tries to scrape by in this day and age and should try to get back to the real family feel that these kids movie's held.

You guys have forgotten some other great films from back then.

Free Willy trilogy

Flipper

Dunston checks in

Monkey trouble

Now and Then

The little princess

the secret garden

North

Far from home

Milk money

But you are all right about movies being better back then. i just finished watching casper and i still love it as an adult. I actually own all the movies listed and though they are all tweens movies they gave us alot of different genues. now its always the same sort of story lines, mainly girls that sing and become famous. (lizzie mcguire, hannah montana, thats so raven, etc) but back in the day we had our dramas (the little princess), adventure (far from home), romance (the secret garden, i always wanted dicken and mary to get together), plus lots of comedy! i would rather have my future kids watching the amazing movies of the 90s than any of the stuff thats out there now!!

reply

hahahaha wow those titles just brought me back...we were really spoiled with TV and Movies, or at least it seems like it. If you were born anywhere in the area of 1985 to 1989, there was alot of new and exciting stuff to watch. Plenty of cartoons as well, like Bobbys World, Life with Louie, Pinky and the Brain...i could go on and on.

p.s. I loved Carpool. What a disaster of a movie/character by Tom Arnold...thats what made it so great.

I'd also call Robin Williams's "Jack" a 90s tween movie, even Billy Madison.

"It was definitly some puerto rican guy alright".-OJ Simpson, South Park

Jumanji was great too.

Home Alone and The Mighty Ducks are my favorites!

And it was Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone in 1990 that sparked this the whole Tween actor craze in the early to mid 1990s.

im actually surprised, all the films mentioned on here i actually own on dvd. i have to own all the classics, didnt realize i had actually bought them all!!

As for someone mentioning pinkie and the brain, i loved that show, but for some reason not many people remember it. Does anyone remember Moris? (dont know how to spell it). From memory pinkie and the brain made him, a big carrot or something!! he even got into the theme song for like 1 episode!!! my sisters and i remember him, but anyone we find who watched the show didnt remember him!!

reply

Wow, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers all of these great movies from childhood. Ah, those were the good old days lol. 90s kids had some great stuff growing up, I feel bad for the subsequent generation. They've go nothing on us.

Man, I love this thread. I just remember some of the titles I forgot. I was trying to remember the movies I saw when I was little.

Yep.. It all seems like classic now. Even if it was crappy or not, they're some of the best movies I've ever seen. Well, at least that's what I thought then. I still love them though.

There's "Fly Away Home".. with Paquin in it. All I could remember from this movie was this girl who's trying to teach her ducks to fly. Not until I re-watch it that I discovered they were geese! Which made more sense coz ducks don't fly. LoL!

Golddiggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain and Now and Then

I love both of those movies. I was saddened and shocked that Ashleigh Aston Moore (played Chrissy in Now and Then and Tracy in Golddiggers) have died a couple of years ago.

I agree I was allso 13 when Little giants came out , I am now 28...ouch! were did time go.I have so many good memories of watching all the films you mentioned when I was a kid. They just dont make them like they used too...

reply

I wasn't gonna post here, but this movie is so obviously 90s, I just couldn't resist. Plus, I love reminiscing about the 90s. Anyway, other movies that are along the lines of the ones mentioned would be The Indian In The Cupboard, Dennis The Menace, Matilda, It Takes Two, and Pinocchio(featuring Jonathon Taylor Thomas). These were such pleasant times for child actors and actresses. Not to mention, a pleasant time in general.

I agree with other people on this thread- 90's kids had it all. I was only 5 when this movie came out but I remember watching it numerous times on VHS. Other movies I love from the 90's that haven't already been mentioned:

All I Want For Christmas
Andre
Big Girls Don't Cry...They Get Even
Fairy Tale
Hocus Pocus
Honey I Shrunk the Kids (even though it came out in the 80's, I routinely watched this and the sequels when I was younger)
Jungle 2 Jungle
Magic in the Water
Small Soldiers
Surf Ninjas

and not to mention the awesome DCOM's that were on Disney back then and not like the crap that airs now

Smart House
Brink
P.U.N.K.S.
Color of Friendship
Zenon (atleast 1 and 2)
Susie Q
Wish Upon A Star
Halloweentown
Alley Cats Strike
Phantom of the Megaplex

Just to name a few...

I was always under the impression that Junior, Icebox and Spike were a little older than the other kids. Like 13 or 14, not 10 or 11 like you said. But what do I know, you may be right.

Lady Bugs

I don't see Kid in King Arthur's Court or Tall Tale on anyone's lists.
