Andy's Plans After Escaping.

Obviously, Andy always planned on escaping. But when he first started there was no way he could have known how evil and corrupt the warden was or that Andy would set up the bank accounts for him to launder money thru. At what point did he decide he would not only clean out all the bank accounts, but would also turn over the evidence to expose the Warden and Hadley? Did he decide to take the money immediately after the accounts were started, or was it much later, when they killed the kid who could have help Andy be released?

In my opinion, things unfolded organically, rather than a big grand plan. Just like how he bought the rock hammer with genuine intentions and it turned into a key piece of his plan. I believe he truly started out just trying to launder money and genuinely be as useful as possible, thus forming Randall. Even though his tunneling obviously was planned, I think he just wanted to keep in favor. It wasn't until Tommy was killed and when the Warden denied any sort of hope of release did he start putting these pieces together.

It could have been either, but I think it was his plan to take the money from the start assuming he could escape.

Andy knew the warden and his money was crooked with the first dollar because it went into the ghost account that Andy set up for him. If the warden was legit, he wouldn't have needed Andy at all. Knowing that the warden had Hadley kill Tommy certainly would have crushed any doubt he had about taking it.

In the film, Andy was carving a number or letter in the concrete on his cell when a large chunk fell off. It was then he asked Red to get him a large poster to hide the hole he decided to make. Cleaning out the warden's bank accounts was how he would finance his life after he escaped.

It was different in the book. Andy had a friend on the outside who hid and invested his money for him. That was all he had waiting for him after he escaped. Stealing the warden's money, the warden's suicide, the arrests and Red seeing Andy on the beach are all inventions for the film.
