Xena and Gabrielle will be lovers in the reboot

During a Q&A session on Tumblr, Grillo-Marxuach confirmed that the two women would be lovers, no bones about it:

i am a very different person with a very different world view than my employer on the 100 - and my work on the 100 was to use my skills to bring that vision to life. xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons. there is no reason to bring back xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s. it will also express my view of the world - which is only further informed by what is happening right now - and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.

Ugh.

I know a lot of people saw them as lovers, but I never did. I never saw their love as sexual or romantic.

They had the same kind of love that develops between soldiers. The platonic love that develops from shared experience and knowing the other person has your back no matter what and would give their life for you without question.

Yes they played with subtext, but it was always in the same joking campy tone as everything else on the show, it was never serious.

Making them lovers kinda takes away from that relationship for me.

That's one way of looking at it...the other way is the right way. See below exchange directly from the show:

Joxer (looking at Xena’s neck): “Is that a hickey?”
Gabrielle and Xena both turn away with guilty looks.

Are we done here? Thanks for coming out.

As I said, played for a laugh, not taken seriously.

Your firm need to view all of the homoerotic subtext as insincere comedy says a lot about you and nothing about what the creators had in mind.

Be alert. The world needs more lerts.

reply

Not really. That was just my interpretation at the time. From what I can remember most people who watched the show didn't see them that way either. Sure there were always conversations but it wasn't a big point of contention.

Casting aspersions on someone's interpretation of subtext from a campy show that went off the air over a decade ago, says far more about you than it does me.

reply

For me, the kiss at the end of the final episode definitely confirms they were in love, romantically.

"I'm not arguing that with you. I know he can get the job, but can he do the job?"

reply

I didn't see that as much of a kiss. But then my whole opinion of the episode was soured by the ridiculous plot that she has to die to atone. As if the last 6 years of the show meant nothing.

reply

What is absolutely ridiculous is how many people died in that fire. Even the Great London Fire killed just a few people. And in this town walls of houses were made of paper. People could have easily escaped the fire.

Lovers in a "lesbian" way or lovers in a "hetro-man" slobber sort of way?

reply

Lovers as in two people in love.

Ahh because I don't agree with you I'm a homophobe. Got it. No point in having a conversation then is there.

reply

Well the subtext was never planned from the begining was it. The chemistry happened naturally.

Im not a subtext fan. I always saw it as a friendship and sisterly bond. I loved the original for playing it the way they did with are they or not.

I fear it could ruin the show making it official. If we end up with relationship drama on and off. I much prefer them as a great team in adventures.

reply

Which means what? The original Xena & Gabrielle were bisexxual?

reply

[deleted]

I tend to think of them as bisexual too based on the original. But we don't know what the reboot will be like. It's possible they could write them as wholly lesbians and not bi at all. But either way my interpretation from what the writer said, is that it will be out in the open.

reply

Didn't the subtext pretty much become text when future reincarnated Xena/Gabrielle got their Xena/Gabrielle memories, then were married the next time we saw them?

I mean, I realize it would not be the same for each life. Adding in Joxer, as I think he was also their soulmate, it probably went a variety of ways in various lifetimes.

Xena/Gab/Joxer
Xena/Gab+Joxer
Xena+Gab/Joxer
Xena+Gab+Joxer

/ Romantic or Sexual Relationship
+ Friendship

The present day form seemed to be Xena/Joxer+Gab, or at least, seemed to be headed that way; and probably not for the first time. They probably hit every combo multiple times. Once they got their memories though, and only the memories from one previous life each, Joxer left Xena, then Xena and Gabrielle were fairly quick to marry each other.

The reboot could have ignored that of course. I am glad that it appears they won't.

All I got from this is that they will continue to have Xena/Gabrielle relationship like there was in the original series, not that they will be open official lovers.

It is right here:

IOW he is saying they plan on fully exploring their relationship which at the time could only be shown as subtext.

it will also express my view of the world - which is only further informed by what is happening right now - and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.

If you following him at Twitter and Tumblr and follow his body of work, especially recently, you know that he very much for gay characters, and relationships.

It will get good support either way initially. But it wont measure up to what the original before it became too preachy and PC. Some will not like it because it lacks many of the same deliveries and qualities of the original..others find the idea of a couple gals in a relationship repulsive. "IF" it got picked up, look for a single season tops.
