I have no idea what I just watched.

I literally did not understand any of the plot. What are sections? What are ghosts? What is the Puppet Master? What is cyber-brain-hacking or whatever it was? What is the significance of the politics? I did not understand who at least half the characters were and why they did the things they did.

Should I have read the manga before watching this? Was the story poorly told? Or am I simply just stupid?

I did enjoy the movie, but I'm sure I would have liked it more if I just understood it.

I just finished watching it for the first time and feel exactly the same.

I plan on writing an epic poem about this gorgeous pie.

lol I just watched this movie for the first time and I was literally considering coming on here and posting exactly what you wrote here...from the title of your thread down to the "Am I just stupid" part and including the fact that I liked it and feel I would like it more the more I rewatched...no joke...

I just watched it for the first time as well and you can go ahead and add me to the list of others on here who had a hard time understanding many elements of the plot.

I did enjoy the movie but feel like I missed some important elements. Glad to see I'm not alone.

I recommend watching a couple "Ghost in the shell explained" videos on youtube for anyone looking for a little more information.

Yes, I felt the same. I stopped the movie halfway to search a bit on the internet and understand a bit better what exactly were they (robots? cyborgs? enhanced humans?), and what was meant by "ghost". With that information I was able to understand the core of the story.
