Why does Morgan Freeman's character...

... even though he is of course against his deeds and whatnot, doesn't speak so ill and angry of the serial killer in question etc? He is a polite and well mannered man in general?

Although I'm very much against the death penalty, and as much as I love this film, I never really understood why he was so adament in stopping David Mills from killing John Doe. Who gives a damn if Doe fulfilled his 'masterpiece' of murder? At least that POS would be gone.

Surely Mills would get off lightly (and would be able to cite provocation and diminished responsibility). Personally, I'm not even sure if he merited being thrown off the force, bearing in mind how unique and extreme his situation was. He was acting in the heat of the moment in having JUST discovered that his pregnant wife had been beheaded. I think a lot of people would have acted similarly to Mills under the same circumstances. Am I wrong?

Why not? Would you have preferred two Mills running around?
