How does the kid get a map to dry land on his back? Is it just randomly tattooed on him? I've watched it several times and can't remember shit

Enola (her) had the back tattoo done by the inhabitants of dry land. When Kevin Costner and party land on the island they find a couple of skeletons in a hut with the same drawing as the tattoo on Enola's back and some primitive tattoo tools. Apparently they tattoo'd her and sent her out into the world but there is no story connecting how she got from dryland to the atoll where Costner's character is imprisoned.
