Who Should Play Rochester?

Personally, I think Joaquin Phoenix. He's not ugly at all,but if you stick a mustache on him, I bet he will be.Just like Rochester in the book, he has a different type of beauty.

reply

i think that besides his scary looks, the next important thing about mr Rochester is his voice. if i should decide by voice, then this Richard Armitage guy would be interesting or even Daniel Craig (killer voice). but their looks...imagine daniel craig with longer darker hair and a black robe. that's way too hilarious.

reply

You suggested Daniel Craig. Timothy Dalton already played him before.

So we could hear "My name is Rochester. Edward Rochester."

reply

I have to agree with those who have already mentioned Hugh Jackman, Nathaniel Parker, and Sean Bean. But what about Jason Isaacs?(The Patriot, Peter Pan...) He's definitely played the "bad guy", but I think he could play someone with a dark side like Rochester.

reply

Jason Isaacs would be good....how about Gerard Butler?

reply

Ooh, I like Gerard Butler. . but maybe I just would like Gerard Butler in anything. He might be able to pull off Rochester. I like Hugh Jackman even more though. He does a good scowl.

I have to confess that I am not very much up-to-date with British actors in their mid 30s, so I cannot come up with any names, but I think I would accept anyone as long as he manages to act as good as Michael Jayston did in the 1973 adaptation.

reply

CHARLIE SHEEN

reply

Christian Bale. I doubt he'd take a part in a movie so over-played--but he'd make a marvelous Rochester. He'd make a marvelous anything.

reply

David Thewlis (Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films) would be an interesting choice, as would Jack Davenport (Commodore Norrington in "Pirates of the Caribbean"). I agree that Joaquin Phoenix would do a nice job, as well.

reply

Jack Davenport would get the girl in this one!

Colin Farrell is he was a bit older.
The Devine Genealogy Goddess!

reply

I think Richard Gere would be a great Rochester

reply

Sadly, Joaquin P. has declared that he will no longer act in movies. It is rumored he wants to pusue a music career.

For Rochester, how about Clive Owen?

reply

Watched the BBC version of Jane Eyre and now I can't think of anyone as Edward Rochester except Toby Stephens :)

If you guys haven't seen it, I strongly recommend, it's on youtube.

reply

Vincent D'Onofrio

reply

Patlange, I love Vincent D'Onofrio!!! He is a superb actor who throws himself into his roles. I had never considered him for Rochester, but I like your idea. Have never seen him do an accent, but I think he is up to it.

Ok, people, I keep reading here actors who are more than 60 years old??!!!
Alan Rickman was born in 1946!!!! Rochester is about 38 in the book, so let's stick with the actors at least around 40!
I'm sure there are some good english actors that age.

Leonardo DiCaprio! Hands down!

"What's the score?"
"Dirty love." The Simpsons

My choices for Mr.Rochester would have to be the following:

Dougrey Scott (Ever After) -he's good in period roles
Alan Rickman (prolly when he's younger)
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (August Rush, Bend it like Beckham) --could be

Altho the best choices for me would either be:
Sam Baker (The Devil Wears Prada; Land of The Dead) -- with darker hair of course
Matthew Goode (Chasing Liberty) = <3
Hugh Jackman (he's so believable in Wolverine and could really get intense)
James Caviezel (Count of Monte Cristo)

I lol at the Radcliffe thing. =p

...to each their own.

Rupert Everett.I can sense chemistry between him and Charlotte. As for the gay thing,I don't know,it somehow adds something to the character.

reply

Leonardo DiCaprio? You're having us on.
