Alan Rickman's Performance

Julia Roberts and Alan Rickman have been criticized for their Irish accents in this movie. Although Roberts does have an awful accent, Rickman's accent was not meant to be Irish in the first place. Anyone with a basic knowledge of this era in Irish history would know that Rickman's character, Eamon de Valera, was an American citizen, born in the U.S. to an Irish mother and a Cuban father. That is the reason that he was not executed when captured after the battle in the post office (the Easter Rising). Great Britain was attempting to get the U.S. to join the Allies in WWI and executing American citizens would not help their cause. Therefore Rickman's performance should not be tarnished with the slander of the ignorant moviegoer.

This is an Irish film.

And don't forget Aidan Quinn... or Liam for that matter!

I know there are a lot of people here who hate 'accent snobs' but this movie is one of those rare attempts at real Irish History and it's a travesty that they got something so basic, so wrong.

WRT Rickman, I -love- his acting, but jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez... just Google any of Dev's speeches on Youtube.

And Liam's mediocre accent just goes to show how from Cork, the Northern accent really is.

There are no words to describe Quinn or Robert's accents... they shoulda done a 'Kevin Costner' and just done their roles in their normal speaking voice.

Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement... Listen, kid, we're all in it together.

Others have said that Rickman's accent in this movie was exactly the way Eamon de Valera spoke in real life. So who's right?
