A thing that annoys me is...

...people are so dependent on Kubrick's version.
If they had adapted The Shining in 1980, but they had made it like this version, people would really love it - it's only because Kubrick's was first that they prefer it and think it's better.

The mini-series is closer to the book (and I like the book alot) but Kubrick's version is a much better movie - better directed, better acted and better atmosphere, this version stays true to its source but doesn't pull it off, the book really scared me but the 1997 mini-series did not.

I didn't see the 1980 Shinning until around 1997 to 1999 ish, can't remember exactly when but I didn't like it as much until I watched it a 2nd time around 2005 or so. I have now seen it about 5 times and think it's great, really atmospheric and creepy. I never did watch the TV mini series until today and I have to say I do prefer the original over it. The new version was good but no where near as creepy and atmospheric as the original. It was also much longer and a little bit boring, it was like they had to have all this fill in it since they made it a 3 part mini series. Not bad and no big deal but I thought it was too long, that's not always a bad thing as I like things like the Lord of the Rings extended editions and the Dances with Wolves long version but this just felt stretched too much. I think they could have accomplished just as much in a 2 parter as they did this 3 parter. Oh well

Dependent ? Is it like drugs ? Popular "OPINION" says it's better. That's ALL this site is about, OPINIONS. There is no definitive right or wrong answer, no ones gonna get a prize for having the "right" answer.
