38.5 minutes before movie starts

That's how long it takes for Will Smith to finally become a Men in Black and don the suit.

Even on my first viewing, I felt like it was a long journey to get his introduction out of the way.

We basically are forced to watch a very long explanation of the movies concept, which needn't be so drawn out.

As opposed to being introduced to these characters in the middle of the movie and not not knowing whos's who and why? Expostion be damned!!

reply

I think 17 minutes would be the limit. Some scenes could easily be removed or worked into other scenes.

I personally would have written the exposition of the Men in Black fully from Will Smiths point of view. It was annoying watching him be confused/annoyed by the whole recruitment process.

We basically were explained the movie’s concept and then had to watch him be explained the concept. It feels like doubling up.

I know what you mean, but I think that was the point. Mixing it up a little by allowing us to watch the protagonist learn something we already knew. And then have to learn it again.

So much more happens than just establishing his character. There's the opening scene establishing the INS. The landing of the bug and the "Edgar suit" needing more sugar... in water. And let's not forget, this was back during a time when there were actual opening credits which took up screen time as well.

Yeah, because God forbid, movies try to set up some mystery and intrigue before throwing you into the main conflict. It's people like you that are the reason why movie sucks so much now.

How long did it take for the Ghostbusters to become the ghostbusters?

reply

Not sure but it's actually a good origin story because they are CREATING the business. So even though we are going through the process of them BECOMING the Ghostbusters, it's an interesting tale.

Whereas with Men In Black, we get the concept pretty quick and then we have to see Will Smith struggle to get his head around it. That's doubling up.

reply

This tale is about the recruitment process of a new MIB member, not creating the organization, but an interesting and necessary origin story regardless.

reply

Yes but it should be an either or situation, not a both situation. We could have easily learned of the MIB from Will Smith's point of view.

Michael took like two hours to become The Godfather
