agreed, one of my fav's

Yeah, i just finished re-watching it again just now (Aug 16th 2015(my previous viewing was Jan 20th 2013)) and it held steady. it's 6.7/10 average is definitely too low as i think the low 7's should be the minimum score for it's average.

in fact, it's within my Top 100-ish movies ever. it's my 2nd favorite Johnny Depp movie to behind Blow (2001)(9/10). i give The Ninth Gate a solid 8/10. basically it's the general mood/atmosphere of the movie which helps sell it. also, it's definitely the directors best movie to.

it's definitely the director's best movie too.

Considering he's got the critically acclaimed Rosemary's Baby (1968) (1 Oscar), Chinatown (1974) (1 Oscar), and The Pianist (2002) (3 Oscars) under his belt, many people would probably argue that. But I happen to agree that this is indeed Polanski's best work.

I think the reason it's so criminally underrated is because the nuances and intricacies are so rich that it requires multiple viewings to really absorb everything that's actually presented. Once I started delving into the esoteric nature of the themes, I began noticing things on each viewing. Even on my tenth viewing. Also (as I mentioned elsewhere recently), it was incorrectly marketed as a supernatural horror, whereas it's more of a cat & mouse mystery with a supernatural theme.

I also think The Ghost Writer (2010) is quite similar in mood and pacing and is my second favourite film by Polanski.

It's among my favorites that I enjoy re-watching frequently too. Even just on an aesthetic level, I enjoy the mood and the playful interactions between Corso and Green Eyes. Nice touches of subtle humor throughout. Enjoyable on a deeper level as well.

agreed 100 % very underrated

One enjoyable and intriguing movie. While not as dark as I expected (the subtle humor works), I find its approach to the subject matter quite interesting. Also, I really dig how stylish and atmospheric it is.

You want something corny? You got it!

It has a great ambience. One of the best mystery films.

One of those films I’ve seen many many times yet always find myself drawn into for another viewing.

reply

Yeah, I find it very rewatchable. I've seen it numerous times over the years and every now and again I feel compelled to revisit it.

It's such a powerful trait for a film to have. It's the X factor that takes a great film and makes it a favorite film.
