The topic of sex in Japan must be pretty Tabu

In so many Anime's that I see women are always strongly connected to sex. Either they dress like a school girl, where you can see their ass clearly with huge cleavage (Vampire Hunter D) or they are getting violated sexually in some way. And always when they are violated sexually (not that its enough) their body is always shown gratiously. Im sure I dont have to give examples here.

Also, lets talk about roles. The girls in these movies are always "girls", small petite, bubbly personality, smiling all the time etc etc. Cute and innocent. The MEN however, are almost always the stoic hero who doesnt speak much. He is usually big in size or physicially strong and almost always is in charge and "saves" the girl. Of course, this has led to the opposite in other movies (it is natural that when something has a strong presense people do the opposite, as in the strong women warrior in mononoke or ghost in a shell).

I always get disturbed when watching anime because there is always a strong sexual pervesion. Think about what I wrote above and try to find it in any of these movies: Akira, Ghost in a Shell, Ninja scroll, perfect blue, Vampire Hunter D. And ive probably only watched 10-15 anime movies in my life so I'm sure there is more.

It led me to the conclusion that sex roles in Japan are not only primitive but also perverted. The word "sex" is tabu so the sexual needs arent expressed in a healthy way so they become perverted. Since sexual drive is the strongest in men, it is they that suffer the most. This is expressed in Anime movies as well in forms of women being sexualized and treated as if part of a perverted mans sex dreams. Of course women suffer too, believeing that they should be some type of doll who is a housewife and is nice to her husband and trying to please everyone all the time.

Why am I saying its primitive? Because of the strong roles. STRONG man, WEAK woman. This seems to be the case so often in these animes. Also, the woman is always put at the mercy of the man. When men control women they do so through force. When women control men they use their cunning (crude generalization). BUT, I never see the latter, its just men physicially dominating women over and over and over. Of course, it is to be considered that some of them are pretty old movies and that is expected.

What do you guys think??

The topic of sex definetly isn't taboo. Kids as young as 4 and 5 see programming with brief nudity and sexual innuendo in Japan. No, the issue is definetly sexism. As far as first world countries go, Japan is still pretty far behind it's peers as far as sex relations. Girls are made to wear school uniforms with exceptionally short skirts and are even colored by gender, sexual harassment is exceptionally high, and even legally tolerated to a pretty extrenious extent.

That really pisses me off TBH. I notice a lot of asian girls, or rather, from that area-ish are rather weird when it comes to sex. They seem to be overly fixated on who has the power and playing mindgames. Also, they seem really horny in general. I dunno, just weird etc. Do you have any insight into this??

Ore=Sama is right Japan does seem to be quite sexual.

Sailormoon carries a CH8 rating in Japan (8+) and has nudity, innuendo, profanity and suggestive themes.

Japan along with Sweden is a very sexual country. There's entire channels dedicated to porn, even on basic cable. Used panty stores, sex toy shops, etc.

It's not taboo, they're just probably a little more hush-hush about it.

A person hates you because they either wanna be you, see you as a threat, or hate themself

reply

Hey, I don't know what kind of stuff you use but I bet it's illegal. I happen to live in sweden and unliek what you americans think, our public spaces, TV shows and such are not "sexy" at all. You can't even find a "adult video store" in most bigger cities, there are almost no stores dedicated to selling "adult toys" at all even.
Nope, we might have a sex freely when we're 15, and our babes might be awesome, but you'll have a hard time finding and kind of porn or sex in publik, on TV or similar :P

maybe your not looking in the right places

Sweden is a very sexual country?

Wat?

I think maybe he got it mixed up with Holland

Of course it is a sexual country, you know, with their staggering 10 million population. They can't get themselves off of each other.

You just described every countries fixation on sexual culture. Japan isn't the only country that has stereotyped sexist archetypes. What makes a bubbly girl in a school girl outfit any different than say a girl acting helpless in a Star Wars metal bikini that geek culture in America is so obsessed with only to be saved by the manly/arrogant Han Solo character?

Sexual fixation isn't exclusively a Japanese phenomenon, its a human phenomenon.

From what I have seen in my year of living in Japan, sex is not really taboo ; people talk about it quite openly, people read weird tentacle-sex mangas on the train when everyone can see, people stroll casually into sex shops, etc.

I got the impression that unlike us occidentals, sex can be part of a story. For example, only mangas and anime that are explicitly rated "X" can only be bought by adults ; other mangas/anime, which have huge variety in terms of story and content, can be bought by absolutely anyone, and a LOT of them contain at least nudity (I don't read mangas, but I was almost always able to find some nudity in every manga I flipped through in manga shops).

As for all the tentacle/weird fetishes, I think it comes from the fact that in Japan ,all pornographic material must be censored, which with time gave birth to weird ideas to circumvent this censorship.

HOWEVER, I have seen pretty extreme stuff, such as incest, scatophilia, and last but not least juvenile porn, which was very very wrong imo.

I would agree with Ore-sama concerning sexism, even today the woman is kinda expected to stay at home once married.

In conclusion, I want to say that I often noticed that sex in Japan has the same status as violence in the USA : there are no real limits and it is viewed as entertainment, whereas in the USA sex is quite taboo, finding its way only in porn movies and teen movies :)
But in Japan, the crime rates is one of the lowest in the world, so I would say that USA should have more sex and less violence on TV, that way everyone would become like the Japanese :)

The tentacle thing is just part of their tradition in art. If you look at ancient Japanese erotic paintings, you can always see a woman having an orgasm by being penetrated by an octopus. It has always been seen as a total level of pleasure, and this tradition is still alive and continuously represented. It's just the peculiarity of a culture. Sex as something mysterious and dangerous, often "monstrous".

This has always led their sexuality to be very "perverted", by I don't mean in a negative way. Just think about all the snuff movie series in the 70's... it's not only an anime thing, it's their society. Oh, and the school girls with extremely high skirts.
Women are seen as a total object of desire. For someone might seem awful, for others might be sex subtly represented in society.

What drives Japanese people to craziness and to sexual frustration is the pression that society puts on them. You must have an high level of education, a very good job and a good family to be highly considered, otherwise you are seen as an outsider. That's the only reason I feel people are frustrated.

I might be wrong, but that's the idea I've always had.

I get the point you're trying to get across but that was just BS.
Leia basically saves herself, chokes the bad guy, ironically breaking the damsel in distress outfit she was wearing. Han Solo was almost incapitated at that point and in fact *she* was trying to save *him*, being pretty badass in general. She's on even terms with the other male characters basically from her first appearance on screen, so just shut your mouth when you have no idea what you are talking about.

reply

This is better than the crap we've had to put up with in nazi america during the past 10 years...purity rings, any girl who shows the least bit of sexuality being called a "skank" and "slut", and her being bullied as a result, an increasing number of people going to prison for non-crimes with the public cheering this on. The truth is, the current generation in nazi america is one of the most deranged in the world, and in history...and american culture as a whole has dropped off the deep-end. Bring on the backlash!!!

reply

Isn't it a bit strange that you bring this up in connection with Perfect Blue, where there is no such strong man, where the powerful and mean character is another woman, and where our heroine, though frail and fitting well in the role of the victim, does eventually fight for her own life and mental sanity, and in the end she wins?... Besides, yes the Japanese do seem very weird from many points of view, but isn't that due to the fact that Westerners judge them by Western standards and traditions? An apple might seem quite perverted if judged as an orange (no inedible shell? one homogeneous mass of fruit instead of orderly slices? ewwww!!)
I am also freaked out sometimes by Japanese peculiarities, but the thing is that I am watching Japanese movies / reading Japanese books etc. especially because I want to learn a different perspective upon human social behaviour; often I can't actually see, feel things from that different perspective; but still, I can at least try to conceive, though it's only on a theoretical level, how people can act according to a totally different set of social laws, which extends to different aesthetic, ethical, epistemic and even ontological principles...
And saying that sex roles in Japan are not only primitive but also perverted is really seeing Japanese mores through a Western lens.

You just gave me an excellent metaphor for what I want to say to a lot of people. Thanks!

I think you should learn more about Japanese culture, before making generalities.

That being said i have noticed that there are a lot of anime movies and tv shows that show women as sex objects and nothing more. even when they are raped it's not like they try and put up much of a fight. Either that or they are blackmailed into having sex(still rape). From what I've read there are women only trains, so women go unmolested during rush hour.

I once read this manga series called confidential confession It deals with social ills in Japanese society. Part was about a girl that got raped, and it would seem at the time of it first publication, if a rape goes unreported for 6 months then it can not brought to court. When main character's friend sees pictures of the rape, she ask the girls why didn't' she fight back and bit the guy that forcing her to give her oral. When the girl tells her bf what happened he tells her that she should have killed herself. Ultimately she and her family move, and eventually she and her bf get back together.

Of all the developed nations Japan has the lowest crime rate and the birth rate. so i don't think men and women are having a much sex as their porn would make you think they do. Also more women are working instead of being home making babies, and caring for them.

Have you ever thought most of the anime you watch, was written for men not for women. There are some shows that are written for women and you can tell the differences by looking at. Most of the girls breast are small. The eyes on all the younger characters are huge and round. And the guys very thin.

Japanese girls are horny for Westerners, that's for sure- hit up any club and you will have very little trouble scoring.

reply

I think most Japanese men, and to some extent the women, are sexually repressed which leads them to become, as you say, perverted. Gosh, these are the people who make tentacle sex and whatever kinds of creepy sex they could think of. Isn't the story of Sada Abe a perfect example of their sexual repression and that event happened more than five decades ago? I'm not saying it's only the Japanese, but it is quite prevalent in their country.

You have to realize that a lot of the anime released in the West are of the more extreme type that the average Japanese has probably never even heard of. Many of the more popular mainstream shows don't get licensed in the USA, so we're getting a very skewed perception.

reply

That's not true, especially nowadays (but even a couple years ago you could easily get anything). Just about every show shown in Japan is available in some way or another in the US through various streaming sites and torrents. Yeah the very casual viewer is only going to see what makes it to cartoon network which is like nothing, but anyone with any interest in anime can watch most of the shows within a day or two of airing in Japan, or months if they want a dub and it's popular enough to be dubbed.
