lisa's character

*spoilers ahead*

i thought overall the film was very good but one thing that keeps bugging me is the plot twist for lisa's character (rachael leigh cook) - what's her motive to help nurv? i thought that milo (ryan philippe) talking to rachel about her past (stepfather molesting her) and other things would definitely put her on his side, but then in the end she just left the room with all the bad guys...

I just saw Antitrust last night and I was shocked that she turned on him. I was hoping when she said "no problem" and then showed the security guy the cable wasn't plugged in that it was a decoy cable. I was pretty shocked that she went with the company.

What I don't understand about her character's twist is this:

Why did she go ahead and write the code for the image/audio synchronization if she was working for NURV all along?

Hidden agendas, perhaps?

reply

As I interpreted it, NURV knew what Milo was doing all along. Lisa was the one who actually convinced him that the way to get the word out was to get the system working. Basically, NURV was using whatever means was at their disposal to supply MIlo with the motivation to complete the software.

gereonkos is right. NURV wanted to get the software done on time and Milo needed the software so he could tell the world the truth. I think Lisa was using this to get him to finish the software. But I thought it was a pretty bad plot twist, like it was just tacked on at the last minute. Didn't make much sense to me. BTW I didn't get it the first time I saw it, then my brother watched it and I asked him if he knew why she did what she did and he told me. He's only 12! It's actually in the movie, if you watch it again you'll probably understand it better.

Agreed,no better way to achieve a desired outcome then to control the situation...it's called "Hegalian(sp?) prinicple"
Regardless of the critics and the general response I liked this movie.

Hey! watch it lugnuts!

Lisa had to do the GUI's or else Milo would know what was going on.

As someone answered in the thread "Major plot hole in movie...", Gary was incredibly strategic and attempted to out think Milo's moves and countermoves before even Milo made them.

That being said: Lisa was NEVER molested.

Gary knew that Milo's curiosity would probably get the better of him eventually and that he might find the files at some point. So, he planted false information about Lisa being molested while leaving the information about the girlfriend. That way if Milo did find it, the information would cause him to distrust his girlfriend while forcing him to seek an ally who was already working for Gary.

(That was my explanation. The movie never went into one...and I liked that.)

reply

I'm sorry, but thinking strategically, I do not see the sense in leaving all that incriminating information where you expect a geek to find it, while only falsifying one bit of data. If he did that, why not falsify the rest of the data? Then you have two spies that Milo trusts instead of one. (3 if one counts ND47, the Justice guy; the real info in those files cost them another potential spy to watch Milo).

I think Lisa's molestation was true, and perhaps Lisa was working for Gary because he had become a father figure to her - daughters, in those relationships, are often very loyal and obedient to their father figures plans/desires. Anyway, they DID seem fairly close in the scene when Milo is returned to Gary, and how did she become a computer genius after such a hard childhood? I think Gary as Lisa's father figure would explain a lot.

reply

Yea,it's a good explanation...still controlling the situation...good one.

There's a deleted scene on the DVD Version where Lisa is caught by a security guy while filming the satellite dishes...

I got the feeling they planted the molestation piece in her file so that NURV would KNOW when he tapped into their computers - and when he would need to be watched closer - because he would know all the information.

They planted the molestation item to see if he would say anything to Lisa...and with that, notify NURV that he had been in the files.....

i know lol. it made no sense to me either. i thought she was on the goodside, but i guess not because at the end she showed she was on the bad guys side buy giving them the cd. i was just like what i thought she was good?

reply

No it wasn't planted. On her file was a video feed to either a news report or a clip of her father being taken away by police. Wasn't there also an article from a newspaper or something?

Also, if this was all part of Gary's master plan, then why not tip Milo off to the "daycare center"? Why hide it all in such an obscure place. it was even an accident that he happened to find all of this stuff.

Also, if Gary knew that Milo would go into the daycare center, then why leave all that stuff on his girlfriend?

Wouldn't leaving that out give him more of a strategic advantage since he could have used both girls to influence him to finish the satellite sooner???

reply

I don't know why he would but the film definetely gives off the vibe that she was a plant. She probably WAS molested and Gary was there for her and I guess she rather side with him than Milo.

Yeah I agree, I usually cringe when they make the female love interest in cahoots with the bad guy for a last minute twist and this movie did it, TWICE!

And why is simple, they wanted a twist in the end but didn't care for making up a proper reason for it

I guess it's possible Lisa was paid by Gary to seduce Milo from the very getgo (Gary mentions to Milo later that Lisa is a very attractive woman), what doesn't make sense then is that Lisa actually went out of her way to climb Building 21 and check out the satellite uplink as well as signal strength to make sure the Synapse access point was ready for broadcast. Why would she have even bothered to test the satellites if she was in on it the whole time.

So I guess it's more likely that Lisa was caught and then approached by NURV officials after checking out Building 21's satellites, and they offered her a substantial amount of cash to stay loyal to Gary and pretend to help Milo, but that still doesn't explain her preparing a copy of the Synapse software & Gary Reveal Video for Milo to use.

At the end of the film she walks up to Gary as he puts an arm around her, so it seems they have some sort of relationship/loyalty going on well before the film began.
