Jacob + Mary subplot... why?


That story line was completely random and irrelevant to the whole film, it just went nowhere and was, well, pointless.

I agree. I didn't really dig this subplot. This subplot also felt comedic at times (see Jacob's face after he kisses her), and the comedy didn't mesh the movie's overall drama theme.

I guess, like others have said, they were trying to send the message that everyone is capable of committing wrongs, even a straight-laced professor. Was Monty, therefore, worse than most people? And if not, did he deserve to go to jail?
