Sean Penn won an Oscar for this?

I think he's a good actor, but I was surprised by how little his performance in this movie did for me.

reply

Just curious, what performances have done it for you??

I agree with the OP. With the exception of the "Is that my daughter...?" scene, this isn't a memorable Penn performance or character. So much better in the The Falcon and the Snowman, Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking, Casualties of War, Milk and Fast Times...

reply

Don't forget his best movies "Bad Boys" (83') and "colors"

reply

Agreed. I mean, he worked with what he had but aside from the scene where he finds out it's his daughter there's not much else to it that any other actor worth his salt couldn't have done. I was more impressed with Robbins out of the leading three.

I found her but now she is gone...

It was a BS win. Tim Robbins was the star of the film with his compelling performance. Only other performance which was award worthy was Marcia Gay Harden.

One day in the year of the fox came a time remembered well...

I'm not really a fan of Penn and I think he did a good job in this film and deserved a nomination at least, but I agree, Robbins was amazing in this and so was Marcia. They both stole the show! Kevin Bacon was also really good as well who I think he was unfairly overlooked.

reply

IMO Bacon didn't stand out to me, a little lethargic. Robbins and Penn both stole the show I think.

Sean Penn should have won Oscar 2 yrs earlier for "I Am Sam" AND for "Dean Man Walking". I think this was similar to so many actors who ultimately are awarded an Oscar win years after their best work. He's a bit crazy but love Sean Penn. He helped out New Orleans after Katrina (I'm local) & we saw him down the street for filming of "All the King's Men (dog of a movie).

reply

Like EVERY role he plays, he brings his A game. But I do agree with you that sometimes the Academy rewards an actor for one of their lesser roles.

reply

He went full retard in I Am Sam, and no he didn't deserve an Oscar for any of those performances. He's a hammy overactor.

reply

Often subtleties in acting are lost in certain people. Sometimes a simple look can evoke many things for some while others see nothing.
The way he is throughout the movie is impressive, not only at the bursts.

reply

Agreed. The rage scene is the least impressive. Penn has had a lot of great roles. I thought of none of them during this movie. He was a semi-rehabbed gangster and grieving father. And he nailed it.

reply

Agreed. The scene where he mentioned he couldn’t cry for his daughter was very well acted. He was very good in this.
