What do you think Bob whispered to Charlotte at the end?

I think it was something like:

"I dearly love you, Charlotte, and will never forget you all the days of my life; you'll always be in my thoughts & prayers; I promise."

Then he adds the audible "Okay?" To which she confirms "Okay."

reply

He whispered "Let's pretend I'm telling you something really touching and personal so people think we had a moment together. Just nod and say Okay afterward."

reply

Lol

reply

“I have to be leaving, but I won’t let that come between us. OK?” - That's what I've heard most people say it is.

I'm still not sure about it though.

No one really knows what he said, of course, because the movie intentionally conveys it that way; but I don't think that particular line fits because (1.) it's too ambiguous, and (2.) it gives the impression that they'll get together in the future. Both of them understood that they couldn't continue to have a relationship because of their genuine romantic love, which would inevitably lead to a full-blown affair if they allowed the relationship to continue. This would jeopardize their marriages and -- let's face it -- wouldn't work in the long run due to their age difference.

I don't think that's what he says either. At least, I don't think that's all of what he says. It seems longer than that to me.

If that was it though - I've heard others also say that it gives the impression that they will reunite in the future, but I never took it that way at all. I take it to mean "I have to be leaving (I'll never see you again), but I won't let that come between us (but that doesn't change or discredit our connection). Ok?"

It seems longer than that to me.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I read it.

Thanks for the explanation; it makes sense. I wasn't sure how to interpret the line because it's so ambiguous. Speaking of ambiguity, why make that great effort -- stopping the taxi and running through the crowds -- to share some unclear line that -- let's face it -- is rather lame.

Also, their love was unspoken up to this point (and therefore a little obscure), which is why I think Bob finally decided to spill the beans and openly share his great love to charlotte face-to-face and that she'll always be in his heart. After all, why not? It's not like he's ever going to see her again. (And, like I said, they really can't see each other again if they truly cared about their marriages).

He whispered ‘Damn you’re a fine piece of ass, wanna go back to the hotel and make out?’.

reply

He says "This movie is fucking pointless."

It's not. See this thread for insights: https://moviechat.org/tt0335266/Lost-in-Translation/5abaf27c726ee400144678ed/Insights-into-the-films-themes

Nope. It's just an invitation to admire two attractive, cool people on a self pity drive while in an amazing city most of us won't be lucky enough to visit.

Wow. Film star and lovely young woman who is no stranger to film stars have an affinity with each other. Staggering.

reply

Nope.

Yup.

But if that's the shallow way you want to perceive it, what's that to me?

reply

There's nothing deep about this film unless you put it in there yourself. I realised how hollow it was after seeing it the second time. First time I liked it. Murray and ScoJo are very watchable.

What's that to you? I don't know. You're the one who needed to take issue with my reply.

reply

I explained what was deep about the film in that other thread. The movie's iconic for a reason. You either don't want to 'get' it or are too shallow; or maybe the movie's just not your thang. More likely, you're just bucking the trend. Whatever; it's not my concern. You have the right to like or hate the movie and I appreciate your feedback.

I was able to isolate the audio and enhance via my super advanced electronical gizmometer and it clearly said:

"Psss psss pssst, ssss psssss psss ssss psssst."

reply

"I wanna hump your butt"

“No one will ever believe you”
