Does she wear the slutty outfit in every episode?

I like GITS but I stopped watching SAC after the first couple (2 or 3) episodes because of (feel free to laugh or whatever) Major's ridiculous outfit (I think you know which one I mean). I like sexy women but Major in SAC was stupid and IMO quite insulting to mature viewers and Major's character. So my question to those who've seen all of the two seasons is: is she dressed more appropriately in later episodes so I could try watching SAC again?

reply

Depends on the context.

In the action scenes, yes, she's dressed in body armour and whatnot as you'd expect with the minimal of skin showing. When she's lounging about off duty or in Section 9's offices, then no.

But, unlikely costumes or otherwise, it's a really great series so I'd suggest giving it another go.

When darkness overcomes the heart, Lil' Slugger appears...

reply

If I remember correctly those types of outfits dramatically decreased in SAC 2.
I as well felt awkward and embarrassed by her earlier slutty outfits:/

Thanks for your replies, Little Korean (I like Paranoia Agent too) and m8ns1. I was referring to the pink one she wears "in office":

Ah well, I'm starting to run out of mature anime to watch so I'm going to have to suppress my inner critic and resume watching the series.

reply

Just stick with it. There's fan service in nearly every show. It is ridiculous, but she doesn't wear it all the time.

reply

I don't care much for Motoko's aversion to wearing pants either, but her character is too interesting for it to bother me much. It may be fanservice, but I think it plays out fairly natural. Being a cyborg and all, she has kind of an interesting relationship with her body, and it doesn't seem out of character for her to dress in skimpy outfits.

reply

Particularly if you look at the manga. Boy did they ever tone her down.

reply

EXACTLY. Having been cyberized for her entire life, the major has had some bizarre identity issues surrounding her body. Her physical self constantly replaced and upgraded from since she was eight, she can barely remember having a body of her own.

Her supposedly 'slutty' mode of dress is a way of reaffirming her femininity against a sterile world; by dressing so provocatively, she reminds both herself and those around her that she is still a woman.

What with those rather scary net-diving habits and the toll they take on her individuality, she'd damned well better have some safeguards in place.

reply

This is a plausible explanation, given Batou's suggestion that she opt for a male model body.

If she weren't more skilled than him, he could destroy her. Put her in a more capable body and she'll be more capable. The only advantages her body has are:
less weight
smaller target
sex appeal

The last one is the only one that ever becomes an issue...and if it were really necessary, she can just switch or control one remotely.

Motoko's body is like Togusa's gun. It's not without advantages (Togusa trades speed in reloading and magazine capacity for higher caliber, low recoil, and high accuracy), but ultimately she'd be better off if she didn't go with her preference.

UncleAsriel That is an excellent explanation. Elucidating both the problem of the soul in the cyborg, and the social pressures the human piece of her she confronts. This explanation really gets at the center of the character, her struggle that seems to be more real than any action sequence she encounters.

reply

Inner critic. What a jip. Dont be so hoity-toity. Its an outfit - get over it.

reply

The outfit is lame and ridiculous. Its impossible to believe that a "police" organization would allow a prostitute to walk around with her tits and ass hanging out.

you sound mad jealous

I suggest you watch 2nd Gig, the outfits are more tasteful.

Enjoy your worries, you may never have them again!

reply

How could her outfits possibly be offensive? She was NAKED for half of the entire original film! Hahaha.

Anyway, yeah, she wears that quite often but it gets toned down in season 2. In Season 2 she wears the same outfit with an attachable shrug and attachable pants.

Don't type at ME in that tone of voice!

No she was not. She was wearing a flesh colored body suit, hence the lack of nipples. She was only naked in the opening credits and when her body was ripped into pieces.

Don't get me wrong, I could care less if she WAS naked, but half the people who see the movie assume she is, which is wrong. The reason she wears the body suit is because the thermoptic camouflage in the movie requires consistent color to work on.

No women are like that in real life IMO. Girls simply don't wear cute or sexy outfits, or flaunt their feminine nature. They wear incredibly conservative dresses and wait in their husband's house, occasionally reading if they're allowed to.

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go purchase one of those new-fangled automobiles. My stock in the East India Trade Company has risen. Ta!

reply

Indeed, look how much has changed in say 50 years. In another 50 years, everyone will dress like that. Or not get a guy because sex droids are everywhere.

reply

mikpii, please keep on watching it or you'll miss a great series. i felt exactly the same as you do in the first few episodes. both SAC and 2nd Gig tend to have a slow start in my opinion. after that, just go with the fun ride, and you'll miss it when the show is over.

reply

Grow up! If you're that repressed that a woman wearing a skimpy outfit bothers you, don't go to the beach or anywhere else during the summer. You might see bare legs or (horrors!) NIPPLES! Get over yourself, you whiny baby. She wears the outfit because she can. She only wears it when she's at Section 9 HQ, out on her own or at home. She wears the appropriate protective gear in the field and there's a couple of episodes where she wears an actual uniform. She's got a body that most women would kill for and most guys would love their lady to have. Besides, it's a f$&*^*ing cartoon! You have to remember that in the original manga and movie, the therm-optic camouflage only worked if she was naked.

reply

robertcampopiano, Yeah, that is not a well founded explanation, not only did you needlessly insult the OP, but you totally took her out of context. Do we ever see her on the beach?

reply

No she does not. and in the second gig her outfits are a bit more conservitive. its a shame you saw the first moive before reading the manga. Motoko is a much more vibrant character in the manga which i feel they dulled out in the movie...though i loved the movie. Motoko is a bit of a pervert (having VR sex with a few female freinds while on R&R, going to nudie bars), shes very crass, snappy, funny (her talks with aramaki) and down right mean sometimes, though when it comes to business shes a pro and has all the depth that the stand alone complex does alot to bring her closer to the way she is in the manga that she does in the movie version..in fact alot of the story from the manga is put in the series and changed up a little. the orignal manga is broken up into different cases and dates. Give the series another shot you wont be disapointed. and by the way.....if that outfit bothers you ...know that in the scource material she never had to get nude to use optic camo..that was a bit retarted to me than that outfit in the series (which she wore a few times in the book as well)...but again i read the book way before. anyway if you see the movie as the end all be all of the GITS universe your missing out.

reply

It's definitely fan service, which is a huge part of the manga/anime "culture", and honestly, i've seen way sluttier characters in some american TV series... so don't get offended by it, or let it stop you from watching the anime (which i hope, as you said, you did continue watching). It's one of the very best IMHO, along with cowboy beebop and samurai champloo. Peace
NB and she is, after all, a raging cyborg lesbian.

reply

Well, considering she was naked in a lot of her appearance in the first movie, this might be an upgrade. She wears an offical uniform when she's safeguarding the minister and she wears a similar uniform to her comrades when they go on official assignments; the body armor, etc.

It did bother me but then I thought of it this way. A voluputous woman who dresses like that and is taken seriously by her superiors and co-workers is pretty cool. The other characters don't make a big deal about it, they only time they seem to notice her like this is when she shows up to a party in the second season wearing a formal dress.

Remember, as a friend told me. Most of the characters are designed by "nerds who couldn't get dates in high school." I'm kidding, but really....
