Ronan is obnoxious

Tired of the overdone machismo, the character is a real turn off. All he does in each episode is flare his nostrils and threaten to kill everyone. Lame.

but he's the super cool 'alien' warrior who kicks as and takes names and is simply better than everyone else and just *beep* done cliche.

Obviously Teal'c wasn't available

I think the character could have worked if, instead of making him a soldier from a somewhat developed planet, he was from a less developed society and had a childlike fascination with seeing the galaxy for the first time as a member of the Atlantis gang. Think of Jonas Quinn crossed with a very mirthful young Conan from Robert E. Howard's short stories.

The whole badass warrior thing doesn't work, especially since Tayla already fills that role and Ronan is an extremely bad and poorly written attempt at a Teal'c like character.

Still if I were to be stranded on a planet with the Wraith around, I'd want Ronan as my defender.

I love Ronan, he's manly, caring, strong and hot. Doctor McKay, I hate

I like Ronan. He's an obvious cliche, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest when every major character in the show is a cliche. If I was bothered by cliches I don't think SG-1 or Atlantis would have been nearly as enjoyable or re-watchable as I think they are. I agree that McKay is the most annoying of the main group.

I think everyone can agree that McKay is the most annoying.

Yes, Ronan is obnoxious and a terrible character for sure.

They tried way too hard in every single episode to make him look like a "cool tough guy." But the problem with that is that real cool tough guys never try hard to prove that they are cool tough guys. Hence, the writers'/producers' efforts backfire, and Ronan comes off as the wannabe poser that he truly is.

Ronan's true status of a pansy & a faker is also confirmed explicitly in the episode where he asks the lady doctor out on a date, she rejects him, and then he shamefully pretends that he didn't really ask her out on a date. Only a total loser - which Ronan here undoubtedly proves that he is - would do that.

Ford was a vastly better character and the Ford actor was also a much better actor than was the Ronan actor.

Having said all that, yes McKay is certainly still even more insufferable than is Ronan. But that doesn't make Ronan not annoying; it just makes Ronan not as annoying as is McKay.

in ronan's defence he only loved one woman and she died in front of him..

some guys can be tough as nails in danger and war but when it comes to emotions they're just puppies, ronan was just starting to come out of his tough guy going solo routine and didn't expect keller to pick rodney over him, so he was in shock and wounded.

What is a "ronan"?

Do you mean Ronon?

Ronon Dex is a sensible character, had a civilized life before it was taken away from him by the Wraith, and his experience fighting that newfound battle changed his state of mind. He lost his decency due to the Wraith. His involvement with the Atlantis expedition helped bring it back, but he was so damaged that it never fully came back. Be happy that we get at least a hybrid of his new self with his traumatized self.

His name was Ronon

Ronan was the only good character.

Ronon was an okay character. They just never did a damn thing with him, and he wasn't written very consistently. He was a bad ass when the plot needed it, he got his ass handed to him all over the place when the plot demanded it. He makes endless threats and never follows through on any of them. They put a little work into him at first and then just said screw it. The poster above mentioning how Ronon comes off as a bit of a fake poser is kind of right in my opinion, cause that's how he was written. Certainly wasn't Momoa's fault. When introduced, Ronon is basically Riddick at the start of Chronicles. Bad ass hunted across the galaxy who's become a master Wraith slayer. He should have been the backbone of the entire anti-Wraith storyline. And after he was betrayed and captured and broken and made to worship the Wraith, and then had to kick the affliction like a bad OD, Ronon should have hated the Wraith more than ever and finally killed them on sight no matter what. Instead, he becomes even more blase and false threats than ever. I would have treated Ronon like BA Baracus having to go on a plane. Total loose canon whenever the Wraith are involved. Anyhow, the whole cast was treated as supporting players to the Adventures of Rodney McKay, it doesn't really matter.

I liked Ronon more and more as time went on. I thought he WAS cool, well compared to me he is!

Maybe the writing was inconsistent for his character. But that happens on a lot of shows. Many shows are plot driven and the characters' behavior changes to serve the plot.

Sometimes I get the feeling that the Ronon haters are skinny, wimpy guys who got their butts kicked by real life Ronons in their own lives.

The comments sort of remind me of very overweight and/or unattractive women who make disparaging remarks about skinny actresses and supermodels.
