Why did Spielberg stop working with Tom Cruise?

They apparently have never repaired the damage done to their personal relationship that occurred during the marketing campaign for War of The Worlds.

Tom Cruise hired his own sister to perform his publicity and her decision was to have Cruise perform a great deal more publicity than he had done in the past. While this was a shrewd idea, unfortunately, it depended upon Cruise being stable which apparently he wasn’t at that time. Spielberg was apparently embarrassed by Cruise’s actions especially his antics on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show.

The two seemed to move away from one another despite the success of their two respective outings together (Minority Report and War of the Worlds) and things have never been “healed”. Cruise moved into more science fiction while Spielberg seems to have decided on a path of making films that appeal to his childhood tastes. The two have not appeared together in public in nearly two decades and no one has claimed that they have spoken about working together since that time.
