Who else saw it in the theaters?

The opening attack on the big screen was seriously amazing in the theater. One of the most memorable parts of the movie for me.

reply

I did and I agree, one of the best first acts of any movie ever.

I did, and yeah. That opening attack scene where half his neighborhood was just annihilated so effortlessly by the invaders was amazing. Shock and awe, at the time. Him shaking and washing all the ash off of himself when he made it home was powerful too.

The scariest part of the film that haunts me, though, is when the crowd of desperate humans took the van from him. After they surrounded the van and forced it to a stop, someone managed to punch a small hole in the windshield. Then the entire crowd of people were crawling all over the van, and the image of those people on the hood, using their bare hands to rip open the jagged shards of glass and get inside... Jesus. Desperation turning people into animals is the most horrifying thing ever, for me at least.

When I read this I immediately thought of this:

I agree that was a horrible and devastating scene. I really love that movie and thought it was well done. The only negative for me were the kids. They were awful.

I didn't have as much issue with the kids as most people seem to, although I did definitely want to slap the teenage son a few times.

The main negative of the film for me was the ending. I understand this isn't really the movie's fault because it was just being loyal to the source material it was based on, but the ending was really underwhelming to me. I just watched this amazing 2 hour buildup of aliens invading the entire planet and dominating Humanity with ease, and then just as I was anxiously wondering how Humans were possibly going to turn this around... all the aliens just suddenly started keeling over and dying, out of nowhere. And why?

Well the narrator comes on and just straight-up tells us: "Oh, it was germs. Germs got them. The end."

OOH-WEE I'm glad I didn't!! Hearing Dakota Fanning screech and yell at top level audio for almost the entire length of the movie would have had me clawing at my ears and running out of the theater!!

Smart choice.

reply

I did, regrettably. Had to wait for the director's cut to be released on DVD, to finally see Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning's sex scene, as it was shamefully left out of the theatrical version

reply

I did. Loved it than and love it now...

Same. It’s one of Spielberg’s best, PG-13 and it’s far more terrifying and disturbing than most R rated horror films. It works because it’s covertly another holocaust film like Schindler’s and taps into the deep fear of being mass exterminated.

That was one of the best senes I've ever seen in theatres. The buildup, the musical score, the sound design, it all worked so well. I remember thinking I had just watched one of the most insane things ever put onto the big screen. It's actually a pretty horrific scene. Too bad the movie essentially peaked there, and the rest of the film never grabbed my interested after that. I left the film thinking it was awesome almost solely based on that one moment. The movie just becomes dull and stupid after that.
