If I like this and Cowboy Bebop

What else will I like?

Not really huge on Anime, obviously seen Akira and Ghost in the Shell and loved them amongst a couple others but Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo completely rocked my world. Is there anything out there similar? Good characters and stories...I usually can't handle anime, some of it's just too extreme and random for me but I adored these 2 series.

Also does anyone know what Shinichirō Watanabe is doing these days, what he plans to do next?

Thanks.

Bleach comes on Adult Swim tonight, too. I'm going to check it out now.

Eh, I disagree. I don't think Bleach is similar. It is at first, but then it just draaaaaaaaags. And no one dies, which is annoying.

Bleach is less about the story and more about fan service, in my opinion. Although the first 2 arcs are pretty solid, it does not compare to the two you've mentionned, espicially Bebop.

I'm like you dude, Cowboy and Champloo were some of my first couple anime and Bleach is an excellent choice. It rocked my world. It made me check out many more such as Afro Samurai which is similar to Champloo.
Bleach seems to loose its glory somewhere around episode 75.

Skip the Bount arc in the Bleach anime. That whole thing was... not good. I prefer the manga, but Bleach as a whole is pure brilliance. If you haven't seen it, go and see it.

I'm Dexter Morgan. I... can't think of anything clever to say.

I recommend Black Lagoon.

Had to write an answer, since I feel very much like the OP towards anime. Some is excellent, most is trash!

You might enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist, it does have a certain degree of randomness, but is much lighter than usual on the general posing and pompous/cliched dialogue than your average anime. Long, solid storyline too.

Steer clear of Bleach if you want solid characters and story. It's fanservice at it's best, but still fanservice, and way to heavy on the "epic" battles.

Two other shows you might like are Berserk(dark and gritty medieval fantasy) and Outlaw Star(bounty hunters in space, bebopesque, but not as good. More slapstick and wackiness.) Still, these two are solid series.

Bleach is a terrible choice. It's a "power creep" anime, which means that like Dragonball and Naruto it follows a slow climb of supposed power or skills or whatever of the main character who progresses through a series of bad guys like video game levels. It's action packed, but it's also got a crap plot and shallow characters. There's a huge market for that sort of stuff, but don't ask me why.

Anyways, Black Lagoon might be a decent choice though it unfortunately does not have an ending in the sense that Bebop and Champloo do. However, a third season is on the way so who knows if they will wrap it up or try to make it ongoing. The smart money is on them milking it dry.

Fullmetal is well written and has compelling characters. It avoids the pitfalls of the "power creep" animes, and the end of the series is extremely satisfying. The movie is absolutely terrible though.

Shinichiro Watanabe has been busy producing Michike To Hatchin, which looks pretty darn good, judging by the trailer. I think next will be an associate producer on the live-action Cowboy Bebop movie.

So you think that by you comin' at me all gangsta you gonna get my pussy?

I'm going to suggest FLCL, Fooly Cooly, Furi Kuri, for a few reasons. Although there are a few completely random moments, the series is short (6 episodes) which makes it accessible to some degree. It's a coming of age story with robots! The artwork for it is awesome and they change things up from time to time which provides a nice touch. Most of the music is done by a Japanese band called The Pillows and it ties it all together really well. This anime isn't for everyone and is very different from Samurai Champloo but I recommend you give it a shot.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Trigun, Wolf's Rain, and Big O.
