Apart from the fact that the movie required them to all be in the van, I mean. A fifteen-year-old should be able to spend a weekend alone in the house, and Dwayne didn't seem like the type who would get into trouble.

I'm glad he did. Paul Dano was the best part of the movie to me.
shareThat strongly jumped out at me too. I'm glad he went obviously, but realistically they shouldn't have tried to make it seem like he had to go and couldn't stay home by himself.

I think because he obviously wasn't going through a great phase (the whole no speaking thing) so they didn't trust him alone. They also wanted him to watch Frank - who may have been with them in the trip but had more opportunities to be alone (e.g. hotel) without Dwayne.
I could have sworn reading on the boards before that there was some thing about Dwayne not being left alone because he had a history of arson or something, but I do not remember any such line in the film at all and it wouldn't seem to fit. It's a very strong memory though...anyone heard this too?
If you listened to the film his mum said she will defiantly let him go to fight school, if he went on the trip.
