I think they had to use a teenage boy in this film, because if the actor had been slightly older, the sex scenes would not have the same impact on the audience. We're supposed to be somewhat shocked by what we are seeing. Of course different people will have different reactions; some will be disturbed, some will be shocked and some won't. However, I think that the point of the OP was about Cate Blanchett's willingness to participate in the sex scenes, due to the fact that the boy's character was only 15. I try not to judge people too much in general and I don't think less of Cate for what her character does in the film, she was only acting. That intercourse scene is particularly uncomfortable to watch for many people, and I imagine it was uncomfortable for Cate to act as well, but it's part of her job. As to whether the boy enjoyed it or not, I have no idea, but I don't think it harmed him in any way. If I recall correctly (and I could be wrong), there wasn't any nudity in the film at all, including the sex scenes. As to whether or not her character, Sheba, did anything wrong, I would say yes, she did. Cheating on her husband with her teenage student was wrong. Sheba must have had some sort of personality disorder, not that that is an excuse. The boy's mother, Sheba's husband, her daughter, and the headmaster at the school where she worked certainly felt that her affair with the boy was wrong. Judi Dench's character knew it was wrong too, but she didn't do the right thing about it because she also had a personality disorder and was obsessed with Sheba. This is a great film that has sex in it, but it's not really about sex, it's about these 2 really messed-up women and how they managed to hurt a lot of people. The boy is a fascinating character as well though--it's normal for a boy to become infatuated with a beautiful teacher, but most of them would not actually pursue a teacher the way this one did.
