"Not sure you made it loud enough"

Maybe I missed something, but I don't get what's happening here.
I understand Bruce fires a round into a brick and then they scanned the bullet fragments and pieced together a finger print.

But I don't understand the circumstances surrounding that:
-Wouldnt the bullet w print already be in the brick recovered at the scene, that they could just scan?
-Why would Bruce need to fire other bullets into other bricks?
-Doesnt it seem like they loaded an intact bullet with the finger print into their giant gun and then fired it, then pieced it back together again? What's the point of that? If they already had a bullet with a print, just get the print, right?

I'm confused....

He was simulating the bullet hitting the brick so he knew how the fragments split apart. Then the computer could extrapolate how to re-match the other bullet's fragments into a 3D model.

I think, anyway.

You're not the only one. I always had trouble with that.

It's a mistake by Nolan, which isn't uncommon if you delve slightly beneath the surface level. There would not be a fingerprint on the actual bullet, only the casing.

This part of the movie always annoyed me. Mostly because the bullet in the actually brick was not fired by a gigantic ass gun, but probably a pistol or rifle. So wouldn't the shatter and impact be much different?

That scene is so stupid into the realm of laughable. Even a kid can point out the impossibility:

1. Fingerprint is not on bullet, but casing!

2. Even the bullet has fingerprint on it, it has zero chance to remain on it after firing and crashing to wall! The heat and impact will erase everything.

3. Why bother to collect "pattern" anyway? Just scan the brick to get the fingerprint!
