dreadful rubbish

The acting is so wooden and JG comes across so stilted with his characters clipped English accent. It's all so contemporary despite its ancient middle east setting. God knows what michael sheen was thinking when he signed up? Its apparent in everything she does that JA cannot act and is just a well spoken pretty posh face!

JG is a good actor; may have been miscast for this movie though.
All the allusions to the modern times have been made for a comic effect I think.
But remember this is not some kind of historical movie. It's a fantasy and pretty enjoyable for what it is.

This movie is a waste of time and 200 million dollars.

Laugh while you can, Monkey Boy!

reply

I think you are being generous.

reply

I would have called it frightful gobbledy-gook, but you seem to have the general idea.

reply

The movie's spectacular as far as production quality goes, but after the first 50 minutes it goes downhill with a needlessly convoluted plot and one action scene after another. There are a lot of amusing and 'exciting' things going on, but the story fails to hook; everything morphs into a tedious blur.

On the positive side, Jake's a heroic protagonist and Gemma is ravishing in an offbeat way, although the filmmakers shoulda taken more advantage of her presence.

reply

You’re right about her presence, but I don’t think they knew how to showcase her energy, which I thought came through much more clearly in Byzantium, a far better movie than this. She is less an actress than she is a movie star. I don’t know why she’s not a bigger movie star. Perhaps that’s her choice. JG was a much better action hero than I expected.

Have you seen "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" (2013)? Gemma's in it and she's quite exceptional for that kind of flick. I was surprised at how good it is, but that's just my humble opinion (I give it an 8/10 for that genre).

reply

I have. It’s on Blu-ray in my video library, but you made an excellent suggestion. It’s a much more enjoyable film than many who have not seen it probably think; but I sincerely believe that Byzantium is the best vampire movie I will ever see.

reply

I haven't seen that one yet so I'll put it on my watchlist. Thanks.

reply

Directed by Neil Jordan, who also directed the best werewolf movie I ever expect to see, The Company of Wolves, and staring the young lady I sincerely believe to be the Foster/Streep of her generation, Saoirse Ronan. You can’t go wrong. Like in Near Dark, a suburb vampire film, the word “vampire” is not in the script. I hope you enjoy it.

reply

I just saw the trailer; it looks good. It's strange that I haven't heard of it until now, but there are loads of hidden gemmas out there; I mean gems.
