Since when do Persians have English accents?

So Gyllenhaal is playing a persian; did he spend a few summers in modern-day England in his youth or something?

I hear a very lazy, very distinct english accent from him, at least in the commercials...

reply

Haahaha, that's what foreign/ancient accents are to Jerry Bruckheimer. What a waste of space.

reply

If you had even bothered to realise WHAT this film is about you would know WHY.

This film is based on a GAME. The prince in the game has an English accent. This is for reasons unnknown. The prince has unknown origins of birth and may have infact come from England or English speaking provinces.

Now spread the word because i'm sick of these repetitive comments.

reply

easy there film-fan- dont agitate your sciatica

all foreign people have one of four main accents to american movie makers:

crappy euro (this includes south/central america, canada and australia)
-crappy english accent
-crappy irish accent
-crappy australian accent
-crappy spanish accent - which covers everything from argentina to spain.
crappy asian accent
crappy middleastern accent
crappy african accents which are indistinguishable from crappy jamaican accents.

What do you expect - Hollywood cant even get american accents right - how many GOOD southern accents have your heard, for example?

reply

My sciata is fine thanks modman for your concern.

The point is they stayed true to the game. Prince has English accent in game. They weren't going to change it. It would have angered the PoP game fans.

First of all, African accents are nothing like Jamaican accents, please don't get that mixed up. Living in Brazil my whole life I can tell the difference.

No. The Game is from Japan.

Therefore, the PoP speaks Japanese. Only in the Western version of the game does he speak a Gwalo english (Not British)

*facepalm* No it isn't the developing company Ubisoft is a french company and the creator of the franchise Jordan Mechner is not even asian, where do you get this crap?

And on top of that, the Sands of Time trilogy was made in Canada. That guy clearly knows nothing.

Gwai loh, not Gwalo. And there is no such thing as British English. It's English, period. As with American English you can speak it with a variety of accents, but not 'British'. And gwai loh is pejorative and means 'ghost man'. If you want the Japanese word it's 'gaijin'.

It doesn't matter whether the game is from Japan, England, America or Jupiter's third moon, its title is 'Prince of Persia'. Persia is now called Iran and they speak Farsi, a variant of Arabic.

Why does it matter what accent he has? Isn't magic sand a clue that maybe, just maybe, it's not real but fiction?

Reading the previous posts I now understand why Jake was doing an English accent. But it did just sound weird.

[edit] probably should have put "But HE just sounded weird"

maybe Jake's just one of those voices that grates on me.... loved all the action stuff, just the voice that gave me pause.

reply

"Persia is now called Iran and they speak Farsi, a variant of Arabic."

Farsi is not a variant of Arabic. They are in two totally different language families. Farsi is in the Indo-European Language family (along with Armenian) and Arabic belongs to the Afro-Asiatic Language family. Farsi may have some word borrowings from Arabic, because of proximity (I know Armenian has borrowings from Arabic).

Though you are correct that the land in modern-day Iran was once called Persia.

I doubt you have ever heard a Canadian accent. Canadian accents don't in the least sound European. Does Ryan Reynolds speak with Euro accent? How about Justin Bieber or Rachel McAdams? I have never heard anyone complaining of a crappy Canadian accent unless it was a stereotype like "abaot" which would make it crappy. Most Canadian accents blend into US accents and belong to what is often referred to as a 'general North American accent.'

you do understand i was kidding around, right Kebrazza? i actually lived in toronto for a year and just outside montreal for another - so i have heard a few canadian accents. i was just pointing out that 'foreign' to a typical crappy american moviemaker is a fairly narrow scope. seems like you missed that entirely.

reply

Heh, my neighbour is from newfoundland and says aboot.

reply

I'm from Newfoundland and the only person I've ever heard say "aboot" was my grade eight and nine nglish teacher, who is from central Canada.

reply

That's not 1 of 4. And we know when accents are bad.

reply

i totally agree with you
i have seen many many movies that include middle-eastern accent and not many of them were right
i remember Transformers 2 which was full of bully ,in Egypt we don't have white desert at least, and when they came to Cairo borders, that guard on boarders did not even say 1 ARABIC Word ..it was like aisdhasoqew
i dunno why they dont just get some residents who have the right accents to say it even if it was 2sec in the movie ,it could ruin it

the only movie that i have seen recently that had a good middle-eastern accent was the hurt locker

reply

Don't defend a *beep* effin movie.
This must have been the worst piece of doodoo i ever seen.

LOL - I was going to post that. It isn't Prince of London or Melbourne. Movie looks horrible and that wanker accent only adds to the stupidity

It's not a wanker accent, it's English. We eat scones and drink tea, non-fat milk with one flat-top sugar

You complain about the accents but none of the historical inaccuracies of Persia itself.

Jack Gyllenhal is a good enough actor, but why are they getting him to play an Arabian prince? Aren't there some good Arab American actors out there, like the ones appearing in 24?

reply

Sweet mother of God...

Persian =/= Arab.

So no.. No Arab actor would ever fit the character of a PERSIAN prince, becuase they are not the same people!

If you know a Persian, try calling him/her Arab and then see what kind of reaction you'll get.

reply

But an Arab would still look more like a Persian (Iranian?) than a white guy.

reply

Not necessarily. Iranians (that includes Persians) come in many variations. A white guy could pretty well play an Iranian. Having an Arab play an Iranian however, is never a good idea.

reply

your full of *beep* iranians look exactly what jake looks like i have many iranian friends who look just like him. iranians are not that dark they are only tanned skinned

Because people, or at least the studio execs think the people do, want to see a famous actor and not an unknown. Beside, why not a white dude when you can have a black dude on Asgard in the Thor movie?

reply

Why don't they just do the movie in farsi? That would be more believable.

reply

Because the video game wasn't done in Farsi since The VIDEO GAME used British accents as well as the film.

My suggestion is do some research on the history of cinema and acting. Or search the boards. This topic has been settled numerous times. It's not a "Bruckheimer thing". It's standard, so live with it. Lastly, if you don't want to hear people speaking English, why don't you watch more foreign stuff instead of complaining about Hollywood's conventions.

It's kinda hard to teach a horse a language without a magic apple

reply

This movie has nothing to do with reality since its all fantasy, it may be as stupid and historicaly incorrect as it wants, i dont think it claims to be anything other then fantasy.

Are people stupid enough to belive this has anything to do with real persia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persia ) or our worls history? Accents? Looks? Culture? Beliefs? Personally i dont, you have to be real thick to belive a hollywood movie based on a game franchise about a prince jumping around in a magical kindom is historical.

Since when do Americans care?

You guys are forgetting that the first Prince Of Persia game came on Apple II in 1989, and that b*tch was silent!! :P

reply

lol i was gonna say that.

didn;t even have sound so how did it have an english accent?

There wasn;t even a voice in the early 90's versions

reply

I'm talking about the game called Prince Of Persia:The Sands of Time, you know the game that spawned a trilogy in 2003. Also the game this movie is specifically based upon. This is NOT an adaptation of the 1989 trilogy. But in The Sands Of Time,The Prince whom narrates the story and talks within the game has a British accent as well as the other characters in the game.

Watch this and tell me he doesn't have a british accent:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-fwZnPvzus&feature=related

Half the people in this thread are retarded.

I mean what exactly do you expect film makers to do when making movies set in ancient times. Do you actually want Gyllenhaal to speak Persia? No, I don'think so. And if he spoke with an American accent you would complain too.

Also, the guy saying they should have got an Arab actor - FACEPALM, read an effing book you moron!

Thank you for injecting some sanity in an otherwise retarted thread.

WORD: The English/British accent is the internationally standard accent for the English language. For example, TV news channels that are based in non english speaking countries, but have English programming, use the British/BBC accent.

reply

yes jake does look persian. iranians are just very tan caucasions infact they are classified as caucasion

reply

It wasn't just for Apple II. MS-DOS and Nintendo systems were included too. Not every computer is an Apple product, especially outside USA, please understand that.

reply

im all for anti-apple fanboism, but get your facts straight, he was right the game was made for the Apple II and was then ported
