Is it worth playing in 2024?

I bought this game when it was only a few years old on clearance, but I never had a chance to play due to life.

I recently bought it on Steam and couldn't get myself to complete the tutorial. It seemed very tedious.

I know this is a good game based on ratings and player testimony. There's always a nostalgia piece to it as well. However, is it worth taking the time to learn and "force" myself to get into it, given the options in 2024?

I love playing a lot of the old games from years ago, but when I already know how to play and use the interface, it's a different experience. Replaying something you're already familiar with and have an attachment to is a much different experience than the first time through.

It's my favorite Civilization game but, for a newcomer, the answer is unfortunately probably not. Civ 4 requires dozens of hours to completely comprehend the complexity of the systems in it and with the dated graphics in particular that's a lot to ask of people.

If you don't mind the required investment of time to understand it and can look past the graphics then you just might get hooked on it though. Also, you probably have them already, but if you're going to give the game a dive then the expansions are essential, with Beyond the Sword basically being required for the game to be fully realized.

Thank you for the honest answer. I have some favorites that I like to replay every few years, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend to someone on the first play. The original Tomb Raider comes to mind.

You're welcome. I've got old games like that that I play every few years as well, like the first two Fallout games and the criminally underappreciated Black and White. Boob Raider is good too though!
