reply

So many good songs from the 80's. I can see from the lists that favourites vary a lot, and it probably depends a lot on your age in the 80's. I'm from 1972 and preferred the happy pop songs and dance music along with a few teenage "nobody understands me" songs.

But, the ones I keep returning to:

Nik Kershaw: Wouldn't It Be Good
Gazebo: I Like Chopin
Belois Some: Imagination
Hall & Oates: Out Of Touch
Heaven 17: Temptation
Pet Shop Boys: Love Comes Quickly and Opportunities
New Order: True Faith

I'll probably think of more once I turn off my PC.

Oh, and someone called A-Ha a one hit wonder - The Living Daylights was a big hit in the 80's, as was Hunting High and Low. They are still a popular live band in Europe and make very good mature pop music. I'd recommend their album Minor Earth Major Sky. Morten Harkett still has an amazing voice.

And a ton of stuff by New Order!

reply

Most of you posting appear to be British as several of the songs or singers you choose were not popular in America (I'm not sure if Shakin' Stevens even had a record released in the States). I love Erasure and New Order but didn't discover them until the 1990's because they got very little attention here in the 1980's.

Some of my favorites in no particular order -
Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes (still THE 80's song to me)
Madonna - Material Girl
Olivia Newton-John & ELO - Xanadu
Rick Springfield - Human Touch
Erasure - Oh, Lamour
Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance
Big Country - In A Big Country
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
Olivia Newton-John - Twist of Fate
the blonde from ABBA (can't spell her name - I Can't Shake Loose
Tina Turner - nearly everything she did this decade
Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done to Deserve This
Donna Summer - Cold Love (not a big hit but one of her best)
Dolly Parton - Downtown (ditto)
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Eddy Grant - Romancing the Stone
Toni Basil - Mickey
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
Gary US Bonds - This Little Girl
Kim Wilde - Kids in America
Dottie West - A Lesson in Leavin'
Johnny Hates Jazz-Shattered Dreams
Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
Pat Benatar - Strangers of the Night
Asia - The Heat of the Moment
Crosby Stills & Nash - Wasted on the Way
The Beach Boys - Kokomo

it's good to relive the 80s with the tunes.... but all other things from the 80s need to stay in the past! (the hair--mullets for sure, neon anything, spandex shorts, leggings under a denim skirt, big bows in the hair, like Debbie Gibson's!, layered skirts!, big glasses, acid wash jeans)

i've perused a few lists and have not seen anyone mention:

Scorpions - Wind of Change! it will always remind me of the Berlin Wall coming down!
The Beach Boys - Kokomo!
Patience
Pour some sugar on me - Def Leopard?
Hands to Heaven
Footloose

i will echo some I have seen:

Martika - Toy Soldiers
Culture Club - Kharma Chameleon
Wham - Wake me up before you go go
Human
Nena - 99 Luft Balloons
