Is Pop! supposed to be Wham!?

Yes, they seem to be an amalgam of various 80s synthpop bands. Duran Duran, The Cars, A-Ha, Wham! Depeche Mode, Erasure, ABC, A Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, Modern Talking, OMD, New Order, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Howard Jones, Modern Talking, Kajagoogoo, Spandau Ballet, Ultravox... Modern English (hey, good call saffym!)

Love the song and video. They captured the look and feel brilliantly.

Oh yeah, a very Wham! like group. Consider, this movie takes place in a world where Wham! doesnt' exist, so yes, Pop! is a wham like group. I had to crack up that Meaningless Kiss even sounds a great deal like Careless Whisper. Too funny.

reply

Yes! Even the butt wiggling!

It reminded me alot of Take That. With "Colin" as the successful solo artist (Robbie Williams) and Alex as the one that should have had a successful solo career but didn't (Gary Barlow)
haaaaa.

Should I give up, or should I just keep Chasing Pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

I would think so...I'd like to hear from the director and producers to see if they were inspired to re-create the 80's techno-pop sound, with influences of Wham! when they put the video together, and if Adam Schlesinger was inspired by Wham! and other 80s bands when writing the song, as well as the others he wrote for the movie. That would really make it a total retro-80s tribute! Even the band name PoP! is spelled with an exclamation point at the end. That's MUCH more than a similarity!

reply

Basically...yep.

The famous guy from PoP! = George Michael
Hugh Grant = The other one from WHAM!

reply

I was thinking Wham! meets A-ha.

TELL that mean ocean!

My second thought was Wham -- the name was reminiscent. But my first thought was Duran Duran and sure enough in the special feature "making of the film" they said they watched a lot of Duran Duran videos, etc.

I watched this with a friend and some of the band names that we thought of were Wham!, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears and Modern English. PoP! seemed to be kind of a mish-mash of a lot of those new wave/new romantic groups from the early 80s.

"Oh, Chuck me!"

reply

It so is Wham!! LOL!

"Meaningless Kiss" is completely "Careless Whisper", and it's clever stuff like this that makes the film just so funny!
